So I guess it's okay for homophobic lawmakers to encourage violence against LGBT people...

A Republican lawmaker in Montana said that LGBTQ people who get beat up for holding hands in public are receiving the “normal consequences associated with the choices they made” and said that LGBTQ people “recruit young people” – a reference to child molestation -in a speech this week.

State Sen. Theresa Manzella (R) was speaking at a “God, Country, Family” event in Clinton, Montana about “the LGBTQ agenda” Wednesday night, defending real estate agent Brandon Huber. Huber is facing an ethics complaint with the Missoula Organization of Realtors for “hate speech” against LGBTQ people after he wrote a letter to his church denouncing a food bank’s Pride fliers.

At the event held at Huber’s Clinton Community Church, Manzella defended the real estate agent/pastor, saying that the Missoula Organization of Realtors “made an awfully big mistake because our founding documents make it clear that he most certainly has the right to stand on his sincerely held beliefs” by even entertaining the complaint, which will be adjudicated next month.

“My right to live a righteous lifestyle based on my sincerely held beliefs does not end where their choice to live a perverse lifestyle begins,” Manzella said, getting applause.

She didn’t stop attacking “alternative LGBTQ lifestyles” while defending the real estate agent, going so far as to accuse the LGBTQ population wanting to “recruit young people,” a reference to child molestation.

She said LGBTQ people “play the protected class card” by complaining about violence against them. She brought up how some queer people are afraid to hold hands with someone of the same sex in public out of fear of getting beat up.

“I’ve got to tell you, I think those are normal consequences associated with the choices they made,” Manzella said.

Social conservatives are losers because:
Queers + people who care about queers >>> people who hate queers

They'll admit defeat eventually. Social conservatives quietly surrender when their positions once they run out of respectable rationalizations for their unrespectable positions.

They'll just quietly sweep their old positions under the rug. They hope people will either forget they ever thought the queers should burn, or hope people will applaud their "open-mindedness" for changing their views when the social cost of their old views becomes too great.

They did it with women's suffrage. They did it with the civil rights movement. They'll do it with queer rights too. We can't let you get generations forget that the social conservatives of today would be even more vile if they could still get away with it.

Except for all of them that still openly mention being opposed to those things.

Just wait 20-30 years. I'm sure social conservatives by then will act like they always loved BLM.

Whatever is left of the centre-right Republicans behave that way, but they're steadily being replaced with people who make it clear their idea of utopia isn't the 1950s, it's the 1850s.

That may be, but at present we live in an environment where it's okay for Republican lawmakers in red states to outright condone violence against LGBT people. It's disturbing.

Republicans have a few choices:
1. Hold onto dying social causes and lose more elections
2. Give up dying social causes and win more elections
3. Hold onto dying social causes and abandon democracy to force them on an unwilling majority

They aren't going to pick the 2nd option, because that would mean admitting defeat, and conservative news outlets will eviscerate any GOPer who advocates that as a RINO.
That leaves them with the first and third options. A distressing number of conservatives these days have been entertaining authoritarianism so they can win through intimidation what they could not win through debate.

↑ This, quoted for truth.

I had been hoping for a "New Age of Enlightenment", where we could all be free from authoritarians telling us what to think, whom to hate, and how to vote.

Instead, we have only Donald Trump's legacy.

Given time, they'll pretend they've always loved Americans of the LGBTQ community. too.

Unless people in the vein of Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Larry Hogan, et al can become the norm in the GOP, they will cease to be viable.

Many of the hard-righters will say “but we’re the party of Lincoln!”. Correction: the GOP *was* the party of Lincoln.

The solution is simple: The GOP needs to become the party of Lincoln again.

They are the party of Trumpism. The chance of them becoming the party of Lincoln or even Reagan again is about the same chance of the UK attacking us and reversing the Revolutionary War.

Stealing roronoa79's idea
If you are a non MAGA "traditional" Republican you have these choices
1. Sell out and Sell out completely to the MAGA's
2. Stay in the party and stay irrelevant and put yourself and your family at risk
3. Become politically homeless, completely irrelevant, at least you can vent in PPR
4. Suck it up, sell out and become a Democrat/Progressive and vote for liberals, pseudo socialists, woke candidates just because they are not MAGA
5. Follow what you told the anti-war people back in '70 "America Love It or Leave It". Emigrating is a lot easier said than done. With the way the world is going whose to say your new country won't become authoritarian.
