New coronavirus mutation detected in Botswana, South Africa and Hong Kong raises concerns for experts

Scientists have discovered a new variant of coronavirus with "extremely long branches" and "high amount of spike mutations" that may not be stopped by existing vaccines.

Scientists have raised concerns about a new variant of coronavirus that has an "extremely high number" of mutations that vaccines may not protect the human body against.

The B.1.1.529 variant was first detected in Botswana, Africa in November with subsequent infections confirmed through genome sequencing in South Africa and in a traveller from Hong Kong after returning from the Rainbow Nation.

Only ten cases have been reported across the world but health experts believe it could have spread further than three countries as nations ease COVID-19 restrictions and restart international travel.

With so many variations of humans to infect, it is really no surprise that it can mutate over and over again. The virus is undergoing a form of genetic evolution to survive. Those variations that can easily be stopped will tend to fade off, while those that tend to be replicated more will survive.

Something that I have always suspected is that different viruses could become combinational within a host which leads to mutations. In layman’s terms, they will change due to exposure to each other during the replication process. The two viruses may not be in the host at the same time, just that they were there as coded artifacts within proteins. This process may be interrelated to exposure to the host’s antibody system (or lack of).

It would be nice if only I could do that. I am more of a master of poisons than of medical cures. My forms of medicine would likely kill the patient long before deactivating the virus in situ. I would likely cause more harm than good. That is the nature of the knowledge that I possess.

Yip. We'll be going round in circles until we spew. It's making me question whether I should get a booster when my time comes and I'm asked.

When the pandemic first started we were all told that the vaccines will get us out of the woods (in the UK at least). Fast forward two years and even fully vaccinated people here can be treated like utter s**t by their communities for daring to step out of line.

Granted this new strain seems to have come about from a lack of vaccination in South Africa.....but my confidence in the vaccine is starting to rapidly plummet.

Yep.

We were getting glimpses of what we thought was light at the end of the tunnel.

And now we know that what we were seeing was the light on an oncoming train!

Oh well.

EU latest to call for border closures over new variant fears

Quote:
The European Commission has recommended that EU countries introduce an "emergency brake" on all travel from the region in response.

The World Health Organization (WHO) is meeting to discuss the new variant.

Scientists still have much to learn about the virus's new mutations, but say they are very worried about it.

The WHO has said it will take a few weeks to understand the impact of the new variant, as experts work to determine how transmissible it is.

The variant is very different to the others that have emerged so far. Scientists have said it is the most heavily mutated version yet, which means Covid vaccines, which were designed using the original strain from Wuhan, may not be as effective.

Stock markets across the world fall sharply on Friday, amid investor fears over the potential economic impact.

The WHO says so far fewer than 100 sample sequences have been reported. Cases have mainly been confirmed in South Africa, but have also been detected in Hong Kong, Israel, Botswana and Belgium.

UK Health Secretary Sajid Javid said on Friday that the variant is "highly likely" to have spread to other countries.

Most of the cases in South Africa have been from its most populated province, Gauteng, of which Johannesburg is the capital city.

Israel's Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said on Friday it is "on the verge of a state of emergency" regarding the new variant, and that he would "act fast, strong and now".

One case was detected in a person who returned from Malawi, according to Israeli media reports quoting the country's health ministry. Another two suspected infections were yet to be confirmed with test results. All three are said to have been fully vaccinated.

The WHO has warned against countries hastily imposing travel restrictions, saying they should look to a "risk-based and scientific approach."

Nevertheless, an increasing number of nations including the UK and the Netherlands have temporarily halted flights from these southern African nations:
South Africa
Botswana
Namibia
Zimbabwe
Eswatini (formerly Swaziland)
Lesotho
The Head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has called for all EU nations to put on the "emergency brake" and stop flights from the region.

Singapore, Italy, France and Israel are among those who have also placed Mozambique on their red lists.

The Czech Republic will ban anyone who has spent more than 12 hours in those nations and also Zambia from entering as of Saturday.

Japan has announced that from Saturday, travellers from southern Africa will need to quarantine for 10 days and take a total of four tests during that time.

Simple solution.
Leave the planet to the virus.
Don't breed. 8)

The Rebel Reetou, from the Stargate SG1 universe had a solution.
So did the Replicators in the Stargate Atlantis Universe.
Kill all humans!
That will fix the Covid's little red wagon. :thumright:

Some believe it is a tad extreme, however.
