...if somehow humans could survive on spaceships would that solve the problem of AI being an existential threat to humanity? Admitted only a select few could do this...

Are there any other (non-software based) simple solutions to the problem?

Artificial intelligence is vital for running spaceships.

So obviously a space ship would be the last place to go to "escape" artificial intelligence.

How is it vital for running spaceships that is??

Life-Support, for one.  Temperature, pressure, humidity, oxygen content, and carbon dioxide content must be continuously monitored and maintained.

Propulsion and astrogation, for another.  Thrust, vector, fuel and ship's mass must also be continuously monitored and controlled.

Communications would also require constant adjustments for range, frequency, and solar activity.

What ... did you think you could just dump a bunch of people into a tin can and hurl them into space?

No but I didn't know the computation would require AI specifically

and you have yet to specify how.

So

So enroll yourself in a university computer-science course.

@Misha

What are you talking about?

Why do you want to "escape artificial intelligence"?

What do you imagine that the phrase "artificial intelligence" means?

"Artificial intelligence" essentially just means "what computers do".

We wouldnt be having this conversation without computers, and the internet, and all of that. Multiple uses of AI.

Hospitals depend on AI for life support equipment.

Similarly NASA depends on myriad types of onboard and offboard computers (both on the ground, and in the ships in space) to run spaceships, and space stations, and unmanned probes.

I thought AI was limited to certain types of algorithms that are distinct from "normal" or "Traditional" computation.

That is only one way of looking at it.  Unfortunately, technology that is considered AI today is likely to be considered "normal" and "traditional" tomorrow.  This is what happened with OCR once it became universally understood and commonplace.

So to save humanity from AI, we'd be better off sending the spaceships with all the AI into space and staying put.

Unfortunately humanity is a far bigger threat to humanity than AI.

AI becomes an existential threat when Humanity become predictable. Humanity becomes predictable when AI is infiltrated into their lives. Infiltrating AI into the life of an individual is easy : present the dogma as if it was merely a tool. But I think the correct term to use in this case is not AI, but 'data science'/'machine learning'.

Do you mean Metatron, by AI ?

you're talking about "big data" being misused by "Big Brother" (govts, corporations) to control us.

Were now even reading about how the Chinese regime is trying to corner the market on the genetic info on all of us.

Yeah. Thats something to fear.

But no friggin space ship is going to save you from it.
