Balwinder Sahni, an Indian businessman based in Dubai, who paid more than $12.5 million for his D5 number plate for one of his Rolls Royces. He says in numerology, D5 represents the number 9 which is his lucky number. He also owns the third-most expensive number-plate ‘09’ which he coughed up $9.48 million for in auction.

People wonder why it's not a great idea to elect billionaires to become world leaders.

@Mountaingoat
It's not the cars it's the fact he would spend almost $20 million on number plates. When you have money coming out of the wazoo and you don't give a cent to charity you spend millions on useless things like throwing millions on a black jack table in a casino, a gold toilet (Trump tower) or stupid number plates.

His thinking ... D + 5 = 9, because D is the 4th letter in the English alphabet.

So, 4 + 5 = 9.

I suppose you didn’t think to see whether or not he ever gave one cent to charity before making that claim.

That link is acting funny on my phone, but the headline is "Dubai number plate collector donates Dh100m to charity".

Maybe he also knows that "D" in hexadecimal arithmetic is "13", and that "D9" equals "11011001" (in binary) and "217" (in decimal).  Thus "D9" represents the ASCII character "┘", which is "Nine o'Clock"!

:D See?  I can do off-the-wall numerology too!

Ok I didn't think about his obvious dedication to numerology and it's link to his fortune. Also explains the furious bidding between like minded billionaires to get the plates at auction.

But honestly I am in the wrong industry if there are brainless millionaires who would pay $50m for a monocoloured canvass

I mean...too much dollars and not enough "sense".
