Micky Dolenz is now the last surviving Monkee.

I’m so upset. The Monkees were my first special interest and Mike was my favorite Monkee.

Yeah, tough break about Nesmith; but he had a good life, what with being the heir to his mother's Liquid Paper estate.

Yep.
Only two surviving members of the Fab Four.

And only one surviving member of the Pre Fab Four.

Dolenz is the type who will live to be 100.

Nesmith was funny with that wool hat he wore all the time. May he rest in peace.

The Monkees were a lot deeper than the "manufactured group" image they had at the time. For instance, the movie 'Head' was as weird and trippy as any of the psychedelic stuff going on at the time.

Even their catchy pop hits were sometimes subversive. For instance "Last Train to To Clarksville was an anti-war song about a soldier going off to Vietnam "And I don't know if I'm ever coming home"

I'm very upset about this. The Monkees are one of my favourite bands and my favourite TV show. The Monkees came along right at the time that the world needed them. It was almost like a miracle. It was a miracle.

I was never sure if the Monkees was a real band or fictional like the Partridge Family.

They started out as a fictional band to compete with the Beatles. The four members had to audition to be a part of the cast. Each had musical talent, so it progressed from there on the tv show. The rest is history.

Yes. They were created by TV execs for a sitcom as a fictional band. Like the Partridge Family, or the Archies. But sorta evolved into a semi real band. At first the band members didnt even play their own instruments. Werent allowed to write songs at first either. But the TV producers hired top songwriters for the show. The stable of writers included Neil Diamond, and Carol King.

They aspired to be a “real” band, and succeeded at least somewhat.

I remember when I was little that show didn't make a lick of sense to me. In the into I liked that brief clip of them taking off Superman style, but I don't recall ever seeing that in an episode.

Looks like there's full episodes available on youtube. I'll have to check them out. This one's pretty cool with the Frank Zappa cameo.
