Would a rheumatologist or dermatologist be able to test for small fiber neuropathy?

I went to the dermatologist and they diagnosed me with allodynia. So, they gave me neurontin to help with the pain and to keep putting this moisturizing cream on. Would it be bad if I only tried the medication and slowly laid off the moisturizer?
