It might be the experience of folks in rural areas…..but certainly not in urban/suburban areas where most of the populace lives.
I have lived in rural areas of the US most of my life.
In the Southeast, it was a common sound (hunters, target practice, etc). I probably heard it several times a week.
Even here in suburban/slightly rural New England, I hear hunters at least once a day (we are near state forests and managed land).
