I know. I went out on Christmas eve with my daughter. I've not drank alcohol for about five years but I thought I would on this occasion. £9.80 for two pints of fruity cider. Im not even joking when I tell you that I nearly fell off my barstool.

It was nice though.

In more ways than one.

This is an example of a sort of reverse cultural patriotism on the part of Americans, whereby they/we are likely to assume that certain social ills are most prevalent in the US. Especially willful ignorance, obesity, violent crime, and so forth.

In fact, the US contrasts sharply with most of Europe (in particular) with regard to acceptance of alcohol consumption as a routine part of day-to-day life.

Also, drunkenness as a pervasive social problem seems more severe in countries with worse standards of living. Case in point would be the Soviet Union (before Gorbachev took unpopular measures to control it).

It's not coincidence that Americans have the reputation for drinking milk at the dinner table.

Americans are hypocrites on this as we are on most such issues.

Not even in the top 10.

On this list Uganda is number 8. Interesting.

The video you posted was from 2012, so maybe something changed?

Possibly. Or the two studies may have had different methods and criteria.

The top six here are four Eastern European nations as well as Germany and Ireland. No surprise at all.

The bottom (driest) ten of the world are all Muslim countries according to that article. Except for Bhutan which is a Buddhist country. Not surprising that Muslim countries would be low on drinking. The map they have shows the color for low drinking coinciding with the color for Islam on maps of the world's religions (north Africa, middle east, Pakistan, skipping India, and then picking up again in Indonesia, and Malaysia).

The US is above average but nowhere near the top.

I think the difference might be that in the other nations it's alcohol mosty bought in stores where as in Uganda it's mostly home brew. This could cause some variance in the counts.

In most of the Islamic world alcohol is illegal but there is a huge black market for it. So the numbers are actually unknown.
