depression
trauma
life circumstances or situation
grieving
poverty
hunger
anti-consumerism movement
not religious
not Christian

etc

Aren't you a gloomy Guss. So called Christmas is for the most part an ancient Pagan holiday btw. I say keep Saturn in Saturnalia.

Being alone. I spent Christmas 1999 and new year's eve 2000 all alone as my parents were overseas and I happen to have nobody to call because I just broke up with my friendship group. The biggest millenium party in human history and nobody to share it with. So I drunk a bottle of whiskey and caught a train to see the fireworks. Unfortunately there's only one cure for loneliness and whiskey wasn't going to work.

Christmas is the worst time for people without friends or family.
