Note: Your profile does not currently display your approximate location. You might get people telling you about food they consider unusual but which you do not.

It's in his username though. N-Z.

Too subtle for me. But maybe others caught it.

I may have been told earlier but I'm genuinely unsure.

I believe you. But maybe enz could join the conversation.

I'll admit I thought "enz" was an allusion to something sort of beginning with that sound, like "ensemble", or something with multiple N's. Being about "New Zealand" would be better.

Then I have to apologize for my ignorance. I assume you've heard of food common in New Zealand but I don't know what that is. I don't know of any restaurants in my area with 'New Zealand Cuisine'.

So we know what would be unusual for you can you give us a hint about what would be usual?

Yeah sorry to be vague

There's a Maori meal called the Hangi which is like a roast that's cooked in the ground with heated rocks. I tried it when I was a kid. Its kinda like steamed food if I remember right

Fish and chips is a popular food but that's really a English thing

We eat pies with beef or steak and maybe cheese sauce in it

When I think about it our homemade meals are like english meals and American fast food chains when eating out.

I think of Indian, Asian and Mediterranean as exotic food. Ive had a bit of it but want to try more. You can find pretty much any type of food in auckland. Away from the larger cities… not so much

I’m looking for savoury food that isn’t a calorie bomb

Thanks for those recipes Double Retired I think I’ll try those greens recipes.

Also forgot to say bbq is a big thing in summer. It’s usually just steak and sausages though

My recommendation is this:

https://www.themediterraneandish.com/menemen-recipe/

This is pretty easy to make and doesn't have much calories. I think this webpage might be of help to you too.

Note that "barbecue" can be a way of cooking but it is also a sauce. While BBQ sauce is often used with meats cooked on a barbecue it can just as well be used on meats cooked in the kitchen. It is the latter which I like.

Here are links to web pages about barbecue sauce.

How about some ranch beams used by a Mexican cook on a ranch in South Texas?

Ingredients
1 large onion, coarsely chopped
2 medium tomatoes, coarsely chopped
4 serrano peppers, finely chopped (w/seeds)
1 cup cilantro, finely chopped
2 cups "Clamato" juice
2 cans of Bush's pinto beans
6 strips of bacon
1 Tbs oil (or lard)

Instructions
Cook the chopped onion in hot oil (lard) until it begins to soften.
Add the bacon.
When the bacon starts to brown, add the beans and stir in the remaining ingredients.
Simmer for 45 minutes.

These are fantastic. Be aware that there can be a large difference in heat from batch to batch. They tend to be rather hot. You could reduce the amount of peppers or removed the seeds to make it milder.
