In my country (US) the women seem more successful at this sport than the men.

Anyway how exactly is this serious?

When you mention "football" the code will depend on the country the person is from

Women's football in Australia means Australian rules football

In New Zealand it means Rugby

In the United Kingdom, a massive part of our culture is centred around football & replaces patriotism or learning the history of ones country as a past-time.

It is the ultimate tribal sport.

Mens football is popular here and the entire football industry is worth extraordinary amounts of money. It is a world sport and the British have arguably the best league in the entire world in terms of the selection of top clubs.

The thread title is a reference to the fact that women's football is seen as a joke in the United Kingdom due to the poor quality of women's football on offer (not necessarily because women are bad at football, but because women in the United Kingdom tend to be more intellectual in their entertainment pursuits, whilst men are more tribal in their entertainment pursuits).

A lack of support for women's football, means there is less funding for talent and thus the entire thing never has taken off.

Yes.

Football = soccer in American terms.
