The kid shouldn’t have been allowed to curse at the lady…..period.

As far as the let's change the world normalization, why is it reasonable for 99.08% percent of the population required to change to accommodate the 0.02%? More awareness will help some but expecting wholesale changes is unobtainable.
Not wanting to be pestered by strangers is not a 0.02% issue. Even autistic people are closer to 2% than 0.02% but people not wanting to be distracted in public places are much more common.

I agree that everyone in the story was on the wrong.
In my culture, children cursing at adults cause outrage but adults not respecting boundaries of children are widely accepted - which shouldn't be the case, as it causes actual harm.

The message I received from reading this thread is people were upset the lady did not recognize the autistic meltdown by agreeing with the kid. When projected and generalized, it's the same as being upset that 98% of the population is unaware or ignorant of the other 2% issues. I think it's unrealistic generalization to want the 98% to change/understand/learn/accommodate the 2% but also understand the frustrations people experience when dealing with NTs.

The lady did not recognize that she was making someone extremely uncomfortable.

I disagree a stranger telling someone their kids are rude would make any parent uncomfortable. I don't think we are on the same page.

I was talking about the kid not the parent. The autistic kid.

But the kid was already in the throes of a meltdown. I'm sure the stranger/lady contributed to the meltdown but it was going to happen anyway. This proves my point, you've voice that the stranger/lady should have known it was an autistic meltdown and instead of helping, she made the situation worst. My point is in today society, it's unrealistic to expect the general population to suddenly be aware of autistic meltdowns.

Quote:
The older woman complained about kids and their obsession with technology while trying to get the middle child's attention in the cart. The stranger told the Reddit user that her kids are rude because they were ignoring her.
This does sound like the meltdown was a direct result of actions of the old lady.

Trying to get his attention could mean anything, I don't see her walking around the shopping cart to get his attention and assumed it was just vocal. Could be wrong as I wasn't there but touching someone's kid is a huge taboo and I'm giving the stranger the benefit of doubt she didn't try. If she did try to correct him by touch, then she was wrong but still points to her ignorance of an autistic meltdown. The manager also took the side of the stranger which points to another NTs not understanding the meltdown.

The problem with most of these stories is there are three sides to it, the family, the stranger, and the truth.

Demanding a stranger kid leaves whatever they're doing and respond to you because you spoke to them - is it socially acceptable where you live?

No, and it makes no sense for the stranger trying to get the boys attention or asking him to leave. The manager asked them to leave. I'm assuming the stranger was being held up and asked for the family to focus on moving the line forward.

If she wanted them just to move, there was no reason to try to get attention of the child in the cart.

I never assumed she wanted them just to move.

Then why would she want their attention? Just seeing a kid wearing headphones and having an ipad would be no reason to touch him or to try and get their attention. If true, then yeah, she was extremely rude but hard to believe it happened.

It’s true that the adult probably had a pathological need somewhere. The adult should have just minded his/her own business.

Sounds like the adult wanted to be profiled on YouTube.
