Russia as a state, legislatively & culturally, are not only extremely homophobic, but racist as a country, too. Don't let Russian or Chinese propaganda convince you otherwise. Communism is not your friend:

Minor correction: Russia is no longer communist at all (hasn't been since the early 1990's or so), and China is now communist in name only, as far as I can tell.

(Not that they were any better, for gays, when they were communist.)
