I currently weigh 171 pounds at nearly 5ft8 and some people recently described me as thin and skinny.

Why is it some people who workout a lot like myself still remain thin?

That's a difficult question to answer as there are too many unknown variables ( diet, metabolism, technique, frequency and weights used etc etc ). A personal trainer would most likely give you the answers you need.

I would guess, active metabolism (which is largely a good thing!)

Also, do you perhaps go a long period in the middle of the day without eating? I used to sometimes go 9 hours without eating.

What is your lifting routine?

How much weight to you lift?

What exercises do you do?

How much time do you spend per session?

How many days a week do you do it?

We need more information still.
I mean the answer may just be genetics; some people struggle to bulk up while young, which is you right now.
Quite a bit can be diet. That's a moderate amount of exercise a week, and so you will need to help your body rebuild muscle after doing weights. Are you taking on the right amount of nutrition afterwards, ideally with a 4:1 ratio carbs:protein? What are you eating the rest of the week? Are you eating properly, getting fresh air and either getting sun or taking Vitamin D? You've barely given us any information so you're making us do a lot of the work and guess work.

Hang on, is this information accurate: "171 pounds at nearly 5ft8"? I have put that into a BMI calculator and guessed at some other factors that came up and that suggests you are in fact overweight:
https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/healthy-we ... alculator/
I'm taller than you and weigh less and I certainly would not describe myself as thin and skinny.
If those stats are correct, who are these people that are saying that to you? They may just be making themselves feel better if they are absolute heffalumps.

according to that calculator I should weigh 155 lbs to be healthier but then it doesn't take into account muscle

I agree, BMI is not a perfect measure by any means and you point out a key problem. But at the same time that reinforces my point to the OP! If the stats provided are accurate, reject the silly criticisms.

Your height and weight equates to 26 BMI. However, the average person in many developed countries is higher than that. So, while you're not thin in an absolute sense, you're more thin than the avg person.

Is that a good or a bad thing that I am thinner than the average person?

I'm 6'1" and 180 pounds which is on the upper end of a "healthy" BMI weight for that height. Medium build. Little fat. 190 pounds puts me "overweight". I'm similar to when I was a young man, and I was sometimes around the giant men back then (very fit men there that'd focus on mass), and they'd only push around 200 pounds with a similar or taller height with little fat.

I'm definitely not what I'd consider thin.

Good thing. You are less succeptible to health risks and your body is probably more conventionally attractive than the average person.

People will get comments for being different, no matter what. In middle school, if you're the 1 chubby kid when everyone is skinny, people will call you too fat. But in adulthood, in your 30's and 40's, when you're the one person at a healthy weight when most of your family/friends are overweight, people will say you're too skinny.
