"Speculate"? When the ruthless, authoritarian country where the virus originated reports only 5K deaths out of a population of 1.4 billion, I think the conclusion that they're lying is a bit more than speculative, even if it inconveniences your little theory about how to approach said virus.

Well, you did cite those numbers to support a theory that falls apart if they are wrong, and they're obviously wrong, so...

This has really been the problem, that the virus was novel and no one really knew how it would perform. They made best guesses using information from other viruses, combined with what they were learning, but it remained novel.

Still, some protocols make sense and some don't. I'm quite glad to be out of the solid surface contact worry; that was a good, traditional, better-safe-than-sorry practice carried over from other viruses and medical protocols that made logical sense, but was time consuming and annoying. Knowing we don't have to do that is a relief.

When it comes to experts who really, truly study and understand the science, there isn't a lot of debate on what the best path of action is given what is known so far (important qualifier, "what is known so far"). That is not the same as it was two years ago, and will change again. I have my own inside sources, too, and its nice to get that extra bit of confidence despite the evolving nature of the science. But ... science isn't the only consideration involved when it comes to public health recommendations, and that is simply the nature of the beast.

(sorry for the extra rambling)

"These are some of the startling observations in a report released on 28 February from a mission organized by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Chinese government that allowed 13 foreigners to join 12 Chinese scientists on a tour of five cities in China to study the state of the COVID-19 epidemic and the effectiveness of the country's response. The findings surprised several of the visiting scientists. "I thought there was no way those numbers could be real," says epidemiologist Tim Eckmanns of the Robert Koch Institute, who was part of the mission.

"But the report is unequivocal. "China's bold approach to contain the rapid spread of this new respiratory pathogen has changed the course of a rapidly escalating and deadly epidemic," it says. "This decline in COVID-19 cases across China is real."

"The question now is whether the world can take lessons from China's apparent success—and whether the massive lockdowns and electronic surveillance measures imposed by an authoritarian government would work in other countries. "When you spend 20, 30 years in this business it's like, ‘Seriously, you're going to try and change that with those tactics?'" says Bruce Aylward, a Canadian WHO epidemiologist who led the international team and briefed journalists about its findings in Beijing and Geneva last week. "Hundreds of thousands of people in China did not get COVID-19 because of this aggressive response."

Yawn, This Report Was Provided

There Is Speculation, Per Mistakes And Nefarious Political Intention That Numbers May
Have Been Under-Reported Both in China And The United States; Yet That Doesn't Take
Away From The Study Here That Shows That Aggressive Measures to Reduce the Spread
of the Virus From the Beginning With an Authoritarian Approach Actually Worked in China.

And Yes, There is Speculation That China's Economy May Suffer From this Authoritarian

American Truckers' 'Freedom' Convoy to D.C. to Launch February 23, Organizers Say

Quote:
Organizers say the American truckers' protest, dubbed "The People's Convoy," will depart on Interstate 40 heading east from Barstow on February 23.

Truckers headed toward the nation's capital are demanding an end to the Emergency Powers Act concerning the pandemic, and to "restore our nation's constitution."

Maureen Steele, the national organizer of the effort, told Newsmax that some 1,000 trucks are expected to start the trip and more will join in as the convoy heads east.

"The Canadian convoy was pretty organic when it happened," said Steele. "Ours, they had a month's notice, so our concern is disruptive groups coming in. We're trying to just prepare for counter-protests and to take safety precautions for that."

"This is about our rights, as well as the freedom of future generations," organizers of the convoy wrote on Facebook. "It's not about political parties, but more so about a government that has forgotten its place and has no regard for our founding fathers' instructions."

Washington D.C.'s Metropolitan Police Department said it plans to deploy its civil disturbance units from February 23 to March 1, in preparation for possible trucker convoys, WUSA9 reported.

Truck convoy organizer eyes DC Beltway shutdown

Quote:
A truck convoy organizer says that his group has plans to shut down the Capital Beltway in the D.C. region this week.

Bob Bolus, who owns a Scranton-based tow truck and truck parts business, said in a Sunday interview that there are plans to block off the Beltway, a local Fox News station reported.

"I'll give you an analogy of that of a giant boa constrictor," Bolus said to Fox5. "That basically squeezes you, chokes you and it swallows you, and that's what we're going to do D.C."

Bolus said that he is planning to leave Pennsylvania on Wednesday and then make his way to the Beltway, the news outlet noted.

"We will be along the Beltway where the Beltway will be shut down," Bolus said, according to Fox News.

Though Blous confirmed to Fox News that the goal of the protest is to block off the major roadway, he said that the demonstrators will not prevent emergency vehicles from passing by.

"There will be a lane open for emergency vehicles, they'll be able to get in and out and all that," Bolus reportedly said. "We will not compromise anybody's safety or health, one way or the other."

When asked about how the road blockage will affect local commuters, Bolus responded with less sympathy.

"As far as if they can't get to work, geez that's too bad," Fox5 reported.

Pentagon expected to OK National Guard for DC truck convoys
Quote:
The Pentagon is expected to approve the deployment of 700 to 800 unarmed National Guard troops to the nation’s capital, a U.S. official said Tuesday, in the face of trucker convoys that are planning protests against pandemic restrictions beginning next week.

The District of Columbia government and the U.S. Capitol Police are requesting the National Guard assistance. The troops would be used largely to help control traffic and are expected to come from the district’s National Guard and three states, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss aid not yet formally approved.

How Is the People's Convoy Getting to D.C.? Route and Timeline
Quote:
Following a Wednesday morning rally at the Adelanto Stadium, the People's Convoy plans to depart from Southern California to Arizona, where it will stay in Kingman overnight. The group then plans to head east on I-40, driving through Arizona, New Mexico and Texas, before reaching Oklahoma on Saturday.

Departing Oklahoma after the weekend, the truckers will next move northeast through Missouri, Indiana and then Ohio.

After spending the night in Cambridge, Ohio on the evening of March 3, the group will stay in Hagerstown, Maryland, for the final night of the transcontinental convoy. The People's Convoy will then leave Maryland for Washington, D.C., and plans to arrive in the beltway area by the evening of March 5.

"The People's Convoy will abide by agreements with local authorities, and terminate in the vicinity of the DC area, but will NOT be going into DC proper," the group said on Sunday.

The route is subject to change.

Trucker convoy returns to D.C. region. Here’s what you need to know.

Quote:
A group of truckers calling itself the “People’s Convoy,” which protested vaccine mandates and aired other right-wing grievances by driving around the Washington region in March, returned to the Hagerstown Speedway in Maryland on Tuesday.

The group had left the speedway on March 31 to return to California, after spending more than three weeks driving in circles around the Capital Beltway and later attempting to drive through D.C., where residents reported harassment and attacks by its members. The convoy is hosting a rally Tuesday evening at the speedway, which is about 80 miles northwest of D.C.

The People’s Convoy, a U.S.-based group of protesters, has been driving around the country in an apparent protest of vaccine mandates, despite many coronavirus-related restrictions at the federal and local levels already being blocked or rescinded.

As the group left Ohio on Monday, it included about 100 vehicles, most of which were passenger cars, not trucks, said Sgt. Brice Nihiser, a spokesman for the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Organizers have not publicized their plans. A statement on the People’s Convoy’s official Telegram channel included calls for “civil disobedience” and apparent regret over how the demonstrations were handled in March, and an incendiary quote from participant David Riddell.

“When we go back to DC, we are not the same convoy that went there the first time,” Riddell said in the statement. “We are coming back with teeth and a backbone!”

In March, D.C. police blocked interstate exits into downtown Washington, restricting the convoy’s ability to drive through the city. It’s not clear whether authorities will be using the same tactics. D.C. police spokeswoman Brianna Burch declined to comment on specific strategies.

People’s Convoy organizers have rallied people by calling pandemic restrictions and mandates an infringement on their freedoms. Leaders initially said the group wanted an end to the national emergency declaration in response to the virus — first issued by President Donald Trump in March 2020 and later extended by President Biden — and for Congress to hold hearings investigating the government’s response to the pandemic.

Still, this movement in the United States, like the “Freedom Convoy” trucker protests in Ottawa, is fueled by far-right extremists and conspiracy theorists, extremism researchers have said. The convoy demonstrators’ hostility toward vaccine mandates is just one of several anti-government, far-right beliefs held by people in this broader movement.

While in Hagerstown in March, the People’s Convoy brought together parents concerned about vaccine mandates for their children, health-care workers who refused to be vaccinated, and members of the Three Percenters, part of the self-styled militia movement, and those who believe QAnon conspiracy theories, including false claims about satanic child-sex-trafficking rings. Christian nationalism was evident in the group’s frequent prayers and invocations of biblical battles. Some urged citizen’s arrests of Biden and Vice President Harris and bragged about being part of the insurrectionist mob that stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

In California last month, convoy participants blasted their horns outside the East Bay home of state Assembly member Buffy Wicks, protesting the Democrat’s support of an abortion rights bill. They were chased out of the neighborhood after area residents, including the younger ones, greeted them with expletives, middle fingers and cartons of eggs.

What was the convoy’s presence like last time?
The convoy embarked on hours-long demonstrations that amounted to sitting in traffic on the Beltway and later, drivers honking their horns along city streets. Some organizers did meet with Republican lawmakers at the Capitol and gave Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) a ride from the speedway into D.C. for a news conference.

During one of the convoy’s morning meetings in Hagerstown, a participant launched into a racist rant against Black Lives Matter Plaza, urging the crowd to go into the District and vandalize it. That afternoon, members of the convoy drove their trucks through the plaza.

Upon leaving the region, the protest had failed to accomplish any of its stated demands and saw a dwindling number of participants, division among supporters, and pushback from local residents and activists.

What has the convoy done since leaving?
The convoy left Hagerstown on March 31 to head to an April 10 vaccination protest in Los Angeles organized by Defeat the Mandates — the same group that rallied on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in January, attracting thousands of people from across the country including anti-vaccine crusaders such as Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Robert Malone.

As the People’s Convoy traveled across the country and rallied in Hagerstown, it claimed to have amassed more than $1.7 million in donations. That amount was collected by the American Foundation for Civil Liberties and Freedom and has increased to $1.89 million, according to the convoy’s website.

Christopher Marston, who is listed in the foundation’s incorporation paperwork as its president, secretary and treasurer, said in March that about 90 percent of the contributions were from small donors — people hearing about the convoy online, or through news or friends — with most financial contributions being no more than $1,000.

At the time, he estimated that when the convoy first traveled across the country, fuel costs were about $50,000 to $70,000 a day. While the convoy was in the D.C. region, daily fuel costs were about $30,000, Marston previously said. There are also other costs associated with the convoy, he said, such as lodging, renting the speedway and security.

On Tuesday, Marston wrote that the AFCLF stepped away from assisting the convoy with advocacy about a month ago and will be ceasing its financial work with the group within a week.Marston said the AFCLF is only disbursing the remainder of the funds raised.and said that “not much funding remains from what was raised.”

Semi off topic Rant
As noted in the part I underlined they pretty much have gotten what they wanted. While there were other factors that a lot of the mandates came down at the time of the original Canadian convey was no accident. As I have been documenting in this thread the "Let 'er Rip" approach to COVID is largely how we are approaching things even in blue states. With the introduction of home testing, the government gave up on collecting accurate data. Today COVID is ripping. Unlike previous peaks, this is not a sharp increase and quick comedown, we on Long Island have been at high levels of transmission for a month now. Officially the positivity rate is less than half of what it was during the original Omicron spike, but antidotely COVID seems more widespread than back at New Year with plenty of people I know getting it for the first time. The government is "recommending" you wear a mask indoors, in other words, virtue signaling. They know if they put mandates back they will be unwilling or unable to enforce them. This wave has been relatively "ok" because of the vaccines and boosters and this variant has been mild, just like a bad flu or cold season. The problem is no cold or flu season I remember occurred in May. And there is this inconvenient thing known as "Long Covid". The experts keep on claiming we don't know about "Long Covid" in vaccinated Omicron victims. Both Omicron and vaccinations have been around long enough that we should have a pretty good idea by now. What's up with that?

We are going to have to hope that future variants get milder and milder as is often the pattern. That said very few people are boosting or further boosting and we know both vaccines and natural immunity wear down unusually quick with COVID so we are going to find out how "mild" Omicron really is. If I was the Russians looking to retaliate and its doable instead of going nuclear which will bring an immediate devastating response I would spread disease knowing the pandemic fatigued distrusting Americans will "Let 'er Rip".
End of Rant:

This convoy is going to end in a bloody riot. Most assume riots happen due to hopelessness. It often happens when people partially gain what they want, expections rise to unrealistic levels, and are not met. We saw that with the riots in the '60s and the "BLM riots" of recent vintage. They going to be met by a Capital Police force still smarting big time about January 6th and its aftermath.
