Eraserhead seemed to be trying too hard to be weird for the sake of it. Videodrome freaked me out cos it was trying to be serious. Not exactly sure what the message was, maybe people getting too obsessed with TV and screens.

When the weird stuff started to happen it was jarring as it tried to make sense for the first hour or so.

It will always be a classic of "weird cinema."

Labyrinth may have been my favorite film since childhood, but I still find that film pretty weird.

Most already mentioned. To which I'll add:

A Clockwork Orange.
The Ninth Configuration.
Conan the Barbarian.
Dune (1984)
Fire Walk With Me
Barton Fink
Motorama
Constantine.

And special mention to The Lost Continent (1968).

Providence (starring John Gielgud) - I saw it in 1978, and hadn't a clue what it was about.

WR Mysteries Of The Organism - 1971 film by the Yugoslavian director Dusam Makevejev. How can this one not have been mentioned yet?

2001, A Space Odyssey - Very spectacular final few minutes, but still don't know where this was coming from, except that it seemed to be something to do with the origin of life in the universe.

I've watched this film many times on DVD, but enjoyed it the most around 12 yrs ago at the royal festival hall. Kubrick's wife introduced it and the Philharmonia Orchestra played the soundtrack live.

It was very trippy.

I think the 2001: A Space Odyssey viewing experience depends upon if you've read the book.
=>- If you've read the book the movie provides spectacular pictures for what you'd read.
=>- If you've not read the book the movie is bewildering.

When I saw the movie in a theater with family I was the only one of our group who'd read the book. I spent the entire movie whispering answers to their questions about what they were seeing.

P.S. The movie's sequel, 2010: The Year We Make Contact, is much more straightforward Science Fiction.
