It's also "mud season" in that part of the Ukraine.

Yeah, the show has just melted. And Ukrainian roads are pretty infamous in the region  (for often being in exceptionally bad condition).

Do Russian tires have a superior reputation?

I've never heard of Russian tires, despite living in the region.
Not sure if they even make any.

Yes. I am sure the OP meant "imported tires from China, as opposed to tires imported from other countries." The only manufactured consumer good Russia itself is known for is the AK 47 (that and maybe vodka).

Satellite states used to supply USSR with various goods.

Quote:
Bit of a tire expert here. Those aren't Soviet-era heavy truck radials. Chinese military tires, and I believe specifically the Yellow Sea YS20. This is a tire I first encountered in Somalia and Sudan; it's a bad Chinese copy of the excellent Michelin XZL military tire design.

I had missed that part. 8O
How absolutely stupid. I mean, most of what I've learned comes from really dense dissections of various real life operations to be able to discuss implications for adding realism to wargaming, but these are the sorts of mistakes that serve as massive negative multipliers to combat effectiveness.

Even the decision to switch to a foreign sourced tire seems misguided because there's less certainty of being able to acquire them under all circumstances.

More directly, switching to something underrated for the job is asking for poor performance, not taking adequate care of them to avoid the known problem as degrading in the sun is another lazy mistake where a bit of sweat can save a lot of blood.

Quote:
Short form: Military trucks need to be turned over and moved once a month for preventative maintenance reasons. In particular you want to exercise the central tire air inflation system (CTIS) to see if lines have leaks or had insect/vermin nests blocking the system.

One of the biggest reasons for the repositioning, per TACOM logistic Representatives, was that direct sunlight ages truck tires.

The repositioning of Trucks in close parking prevents a lot of this sun rotting and cycling the CTIS keeps the tire sidewalls supple. When you leave military truck tires in one place for months on end. The side walls get rotted/brittle such that using low tire pressure setting for any appreciable distance will cause the tires to fail catastrophically via rips.

This is a staggering level of incompetence and goes way beyond 'huh huh Chinese tires'.

Yep....the "satellite states" gave so much to the USSR---that their own populations had to be subjected to food rationing and breadlines. Worse than it was in the US during the Depression.

I don't feel any self-respecting Pole, Latvian, Romanian, etc. wants to go back to those days.

In the communist times, there was a joke:

How do you kill a pig in Poland?
You put a grenade under it. Half the meat flies east, half the meat flies west, and Poles have their blood up.

Volkswagen announced they're closing their factory in Russia. So Russia does have some manufacturing industry. (Without one, how could they build weapons to sell to India and Turkey?)

I wonder how they'll restructure their economy over the next few months and year. And how many assets of Western companies are now stranded (BP will probably have to write off their 20% stake in Gazprom). With all their foreign assets being seized, why would Russia not respond in kind, especially if they want to keep factories running. Yet another opportunity for the oligarchs to gain wealth.

The pandemic helped us see that we need to be self-sufficient. Trump in the USA tried that, but the plandemic exploded and there was no way he could be still be pro-america and he had to face the Gates's controlled W.H.O. -- Putin is taking a stance against the same people who made their fortune in Ukriane, the Bidens and the deep state. As militaries in Ukraine were ready to take the first shot at Russia, Putin being an impulsive guy, he attacked first... which led to the media narrative picking side and dissing everything russian. Mainstream media hate speech is real. See how much gas lighting they did from 2020-2022. The pandemic was blown out of proportion, so is this "war". next!

Somewhat ironic the Russians fell for this given they knew that Napolean and Hitler also got "bogged down" when moving eastward.

Putin seems to have fallen for his own propaganda in planning this one, not accurately assessing realities on the ground either within his own army or within Ukraine. Perhaps he thought he could play the affirmation game (pretend it is one way, and it will be so). Maybe the influences between him and Trump didn't only flow one way (sorry, couldn't resist, since affirmation was Trump's thing).
