So I go looking for alternative sources on this Putingate, and find this site. I think this disclaimer may be a good entry point.

Mediazona was included in the register of "foreign agents". What does it mean?

The Ministry of Justice entered into the register of “foreign agents” ZP LLC, a legal entity that established Mediazona. Our editor-in-chief Sergei Smirnov and our publisher Petr Verzilov were personally included in the register.

The Russian authorities have recently massively and unsystematically replenished the lists of "foreign agents" - they include human rights activists, politicians, activists, journalists, non-profit organizations and independent publications. The list before us included, for example, Meduza, Dozhd and all Radio Liberty projects
