I don't usually find it neither formal nor personal, just weird using names in texts or emails.
Again, my boss does that.
"Hi Mats, what's your opinion on ...", "Thanks Mats".
If it was sent to a group of people, sure, maybe, but when sent to only me? I just don't understand...

Yep, I avoid this too. Especially calling my friends' parents' names - Super awkward.
