Most people prefer to sympathise with me over the many things I'm rather inept at,but don't like it when I post something that shows I'm not totally stupid/useless.

Most people in what arena of your life?

(When you show up as skillful and competent, is it possible that the people who protest/dislike it... are insecure because they are not as good at that skill as you? Is it possible that they are still learning and they are feeling insecure that they aren't as savvy as you? Is it possible that they are feeling embarrassed, rather than inspired by you?)

All of the above, most likely; but that does not make their discomfort Firemonkey's responsibility.

Some people take other people's successes as personal attacks on them: "You're just trying to make me look bad!"

Nobody ever needed Firemonkey's help (or mine) to make them look bad.

That's not true for me at all.

I like it when you speak of your high IQ. And other things you're good at.

I like it when anybody talks about what they are good at.

I don't like it much when somebody talks about how 'inept" they are all the time. It makes me depressed.

^^ ^^^To be fair I'm not very good at anything that could be called 'useful' unlike the two of you. I think I lack the 'common sense gene' along with the 'practical gene'. I've always been more of a book learnt person,by a country mile, than a novel problem solving person .Or at least that's what I've always believed . Basically comparatively lacking in the fluid intelligence department.

It was rather ego boosting then to get a good score on an high range test measuring fluid intelligence. Test normed by a qualified psychometrician. The test is rather different to the standard pattern recognition/mental rotation/spatial test used to assess fluid intelligence.

I posted a picture of the result on a schizophrenia forum I go on, because I was really pleased and surprised, and there was zero response. Not even a 'How did you fluke that? ' sort of comment.

Going into more specifics, what exactly are you best at?

I'm pretty "inept" in a lot of things. I don't like to talk about it much----because it depresses me.

I like to seek to present my "best foot forward." I don't find this to be "phony."

I'm just a clerk; I should have been much more than that. I was never even thought of as being a supervisor; it is thought that I am of "subnormal" social intelligence, somehow.

I would say, as the song goes, "accentuate the positive." Though it's always good to speak of how you're not so good at something---with the eye of being "better" at that "something." But I wouldn't put undue pressure on myself. I would just let the learning happen naturally.

You have some more years to live, Firemonkey. I would take advantage of that time, rather than have regrets about "what could have been." Your back was taken care of. Yes, it was ignored for a while---but at least your stepdaughter and yourself advocated well for you, and you got that at least partially fixed.

Verbal intelligence. Used to be fairly creative, but ever advancing age has dulled that somewhat. I'm quite good at finding info to help people. Much better at that than the socialising part of forum interaction.

That's quite useful, actually, "finding info to help people."

If you provide the info, and they don't do anything about it, that's their problem.

No skill required. Lots of interesting and hopefully informative stuff.

I'm not all that great at that....It's easy for you.....because you're good at it. It requires skill in research----which quite a few people don't have----including many "smart" people.

The answer to your question: No, it's not better to be "inept."

If you're in an environment where one values "ineptness" more than positive aspects, you must get out of that environment, pronto!

That's pretty good. I usually have terrible trouble finding info.

What type of posts do you typically make on that forum?

A mix of schizophrenia/other mental health related articles, general articles and some casual conversation type posts. I kind of suck at the latter, but make such posts far more than I used to.

I think your score is wonderful, well done on that!
You might want to investigate what that test is investigating, to find out more about your strength in that area, sounds interesting.

I love to hear about people's achievements and strengths.

I think it would be great if when people are diagnosed with autism, it would be standard to carry out some tests to investigate their strengths and positives, and give them a report on all their strengths and positives.
I think the diagnosis process and diagnostic reports tend to focus far too much on negatives.
Do you agree?
