Hi everyone,

My mom's birthday is April 8th and at the suggestion of my NT sister, which comedy movies do you consider the best of all time? Our mom loves watching a good comedy film whenever she finds one.

Do not mention romantic comedies because like my NT sister, our mom hates romantic comedies.

Almost anything by Preston Sturges, especially Unfaithfully Yours and The Lady Eve. These are romantic comedies, but not in the way you expect.

Well... You asked what *I* considered to be best. And you didn't give much insight into her tastes beyond it should be a movie that is funny but not romantic. My taste might be stranger than hers...but some I like are:

<=>- The three Universal Horror films with Abbott & Costello
<=>- Allegro non troppo [1976]
<=>- Most of the movies with either three or four of the Marx Brothers
<=>- Black Sheep [2006]—and I don't mean the one from 1996
<=>- Bubba Ho-Tep [2002]
<=>- The Jay & Silent Bob films
<=>- The Crocodile Dundee films
<=>- The Ghostbuster films—[1984], [1989], and [2021] and also [2016]
<=>- The official Gods Must Be Crazy films
<=>- The Johnny English films
<=>- The original Pink Panther films, but just the ones with Peter Sellers
<=>- Over the Hedge [2006]
<=>- The Producers [1967]—though my bride prefers [2005]
<=>- The Rocky Horror Picture Show [1975] (it's sequel not so much)
<=>- The Cornetto trilogy of films
<=>- Son of Rambow [2007]
<=>- This Is the End [2013]
<=>- The Tremors films
<=>- Tucker and Dale vs Evil [2010] Watch and listen closely to this one or else it will seem exactly not funny
<=>- Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit [2005]
<=>- Who Framed Roger Rabbit [1988]

Of course, my taste might not match what you are looking for. And definitely before watching a film with your Mom you should check it out on IMDb—including the "Parents guide" section.

Oh...and I can also recommend some fun zombie films...but the only way they can be called "best" is if you're talking specifically about zombie films.

The Big Lebowski.
High Anxiety.
Blazing Saddles.
Little Shop Of Horrors (remake).
Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?
The Guard.

I'm sure there are many more I can't recall.

Any comedy films that have plenty of "f-bombs" or sex jokes in them I will not consider.

My mom hates sex jokes.

She will not watch the following:
Bubba Ho-Tep
The Rocky Horror Picture Show
Edgar Wright's "Cornetto Trilogy"
This Is The End
The Big Lebowski

I then assume Jay & Silent Bob should be out and so should Tucker and Dale. Possibly Black Sheep, too.

Check the IMDb Parents Guide closely for the Tremors films, especially the first one. They might be OK or might not.

Some other candidates for your consideration:

<=>- The Killer Tomatoes films
<=>- Beetlejuice [1988]
<=>- Being There [1979]
<=>- The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel [2011] and its sequel
<=>- The Bill & Ted films
<=>- Coco [2017] With the highest picture resolution you can get because its graphics are spectacular!
<=>- Encanto [2021]
<=>- Free Guy [2021]
<=>- The Mitchells vs the Machines [2021]
<=>- Monty Python and the Holy Grail [1975]
<=>- Soul [2020]

Good hunting!

Thank you! :)

However, she hated Monty Python and the Holy Grail and The Life of Brian.

How obscure. Unconventional. Anyway, I checked Wikipedia. I have not seen any of his movies. It's apparently "screwball comedy", I'm seeing a lot of 40s , 50's movies...no haven't seen any of them... Some Like It Hot, I've seen that. Because it had marilyn monroe in it, and well... She's hot. Oh 7 year itch as well. I seen that. I like that. Once again, I was checking out Marilyn's body... of work. Such a tragic figure. I believe she was murdered. Something to do with the Dead kennedys. And a crossdressing "G-man." I think.

Perhaps approach Killer Tomatoes with caution. If she can't tolerate absurdly silly films then she might not like those tomatoes. (I hope she could enjoy the Marx Brothers, though!)

And do you know if she liked Tron [1982] or The Matrix [1999] or even Inception [2010] (or any movie with significant portions taking place in any kind of virtual reality). If not, then she might not appreciate the Oscar-nominated for best VFX Free Guy [2021]

She didn't like it.

She also hates musicals.

That is potentially useful info.

<=>- Allegro non troppo [1976] isn't a musical but it has quite a bit of classical music.
<=> - Not done seriously...the orchestra is a mess...hence Comedy.

<=>- The Producers [1967] has music but IMDb doesn't classify it as being a Musical.
<=> -But it does call The Producers [2005] a musical.

<=>- The Bill & Ted films have some music...sort of...opinions might differ.

<=>- Coco [2017] has a lot of music though IMDb does not classify it as a musical.

<=>- Encanto [2021] it does classify as a musical, however.

<=>- Soul [2020] is not a musical but music is an important part of the film.
