Some Russian troops ‘suffering acute radiation sickness’ after capture of Chernobyl reactor
23 hours ago

Sky News host Chris Smith says the capture of the Chernobyl reactor in Ukraine has “backfired terribly” on those Russian troops “assigned to the district,” according to a report by The Times.

“Soldiers are pulling out of the area, after suffering acute radiation sickness, from stupidly digging trenches in contaminated soil,” he said.

“A significant trench network was fortified in what’s known as the Red Forest, a highly toxic area, adjacent to the reactor.

“Seven full busloads of Russian soldiers reportedly arrived at a radiation hospital in Belarus this week, after weeks working in the contaminated forest without any anti-radiation equipment.”

I mean I suppose that is what they get for hanging out in Chernobyl. I figure it only takes two braincells to figure out a nuclear radiation zone is not safe to hang out in.

The Chernoble site is on the route between the border, and the prime objective of the Russian invading army: the Ukrainian capital city of Kiev. So they had to kinda march through, or around, the place.

But any grade school kid on the planet coulda told them that digging in - and making camp- right at the Chernoble site was a bad idea.

Groucho Marx said "'military intelligence' is a contradiction in terms". The Russians seem to prove that.

Belarussian border; otherwise, yes. It's just North of Kyiv.
It's also a place where they could be certain Ukrainians wouldn't be shelling their positions.
Downsides? Swampy and radioactive.
It was relatively safe - a lot of effort has been put into securing the area after the disaster - until Russians started to dig there. That was unbelievably stupid.

I forgot. Putin's buddy who runs Belarus let him use Belarus territory to stage Russian armies. Edited it. Lol!

"Attack em from a spot that they dont expect" I guess was the logic.

Belarus is in a strange position right now - Lukashenko's regime is completely dependent on Kremlin but the people oppose the war very strongly, including e.g. Belarussian railway workers sabotaging connections to Ukraine, so military transports can't reach their destinations.
Support for this war is about 65% in Russia and about 3% in Belarus.

It's very likely that if Belarussian troops were sent to Ukraine, they would instantly surrender or even change sides. Lukashenko likely knows it and, while having practically a Russian pistol pointed at his head, he's trying to stay as unengaged as possible and survive.

Poland is one of two main centers for Belarussian dissidents - the other being Lithuania - so our newspeople interview Belarussian dissidents for their point of view on regular basis. Belarussians don't want to fight Ukraine, they like Ukrainians and their dissidents hope Ukrainian victory could lead to Belarussian independence.

Goes to show you, autocratic leaders will send their soldiers into certain death at a whim.
