It's another round of 'What the heck is that American car?' folks! From an early series 1 episode of The Protectors in 1972.

A very sleek looking vehicle from the same episode, identity unknown:

Two cars from Episode 4, Series 1 of 'The Protectors' from 1972. The first one is a Citroen GS, very much a 1970s model from the company. The other one is a Ford Mustang, but I've no idea which particular version:

The car in which Superintendent Van Der Valk is most often seen in the police drama of the same name, a lowly DAF. This appears to be a police vehicle, not his personal car.

From another episode of Van der Valk, this looks like another DAF Amsterdam Police car of the same type as in the previous post. Wish I knew which precise model it is - I bet they were very cheap to buy and run.

A couple of cars from a mid-1990s film called Ice, starring Traci Lords. The first appears to be a BMW 3-series convertible, but don't know the identity of the other one:

From a 1972 episode of The Protectors, entitled 'King Con'.

A Citroen SM, manufactured 1970-75. An unusually luxurious model from the company, with a V6 Maserati-designed engine. These didn't sell too well though, being complex machines to maintain, and sales collapsed after the 1973-74 oil crisis:

An East European made car serving as a taxi in Prague. I thought it might well be a Tatra model, but can't find a picture of any of their cars that resembles it:

Here we have a Rover SDI police car, from the film Fred, a biopic of British gangster Freddie Foreman. These were manufactured by British Leyland (later known as Austin Rover) in the late 1970s and early-to-mid 1980s, mainly as the Rover 2600 with a straight-six engine, and the Rover 3500 with a V8 engine.

As has been pointed out in an earlier post, these cars, despite their very classy looks, had a very poor reputation for reliability and build quality, and I bet the police forces which ordered them ended up regretting the huge sums they must have spent maintaining and repairing them. The colour scheme was typical of British police cars of the 1980s and 1990s, and such vehicles were popularly referred to as 'jam sandwiches'.

Pretty sure that's a ~'66 Dart.

Pretty sure that's a '67 base model Mustang. Some of the lines are a bit more exaggerated than the pre-facelift models, like that spur on that front quarter and door.

Not sure about that one, I was thinking it looked more like a Zil than a Tatra.

Here are some cars from the British film McVicar, made in 1980, but set around 1970.

Image

A Ford Escort Mk1, with its very distinctive grille and headlight arrangement. A very familiar sight on UK roads in the 1970s and early 1980s.

Image

Image

A Morris 1800 'Landcrab', built by BMC/British Leyland 1964-75, with 1800cc front wheel drive engine.

Image

Image

An E-Type Jaguar Fixed Head Coupe. I think these were very ugly cars compared with the open-top roadster version.

Image

Image

A Sunbeam Alpine Series 4 or 5. These were manufactured 1959-68 by the Rootes motor company based in Coventry, and are sometimes regarded as the company's answer to BMC's MGB, but they in fact appeared three years before the latter cars. Sean Connery drives an early version of this model in the 1959 Bond film Dr No.

Image

Aaaaargh! This film generally does a superb job in staying faithful to the period in which it is set, ie 1969-70, but then lazily includes this shot of a Ford Cortina Mk4 (in white) with an 'R' registration plate from 1976-77.

I've been watching a documentary about the legendary British porn star Mary Millington, who committed suicide in 1979. The film's called Respectable, but needless to say the most interesting thing in it for me was this car, which is an MGB GT, the fixed-head coupe version of the MGB Roadster. There was also a rare version produced from 1973-76 with a Rover V8 engine - that must have been some car to drive....

Some cars from a couple of 1988 episodes of The Bill, a British police series:

Another very impressive shot of a Rover SD1 police car, in the 'jam sandwich' livery.

Image

Here are two cars that were a very common sight on UK roads in the 1980s:

Image

A Vauxhall Cavalier Mk2, manufactured circa 1983-88. Equally popular as a company reps car and as a private purchase.

Image

A Ford Sierra - this first appeared in 1982, and was a replacement for the hugely succesful Ford Cortina series. It was nicknamed the 'Jelly Mould', and it's obvious why from the angle captured in this snapshot.

An Austin Metro police car from another 1988 episode of The Bill. More commonly known by the British public as the 'Mini Metro', this was one of the models which were supposedly going to revive the struggling fortunes of the British Leyland Motor Company when it was introduced in 1980. It did no such thing however, as it wasn't anything like as good as the competition (eg the Ford Fiesta) and BL continued to lose market share throughout the decade.

A Ford Anglia 105E, manufactured 1959-67. These were cheap and basic cars, which were a common sight on UK roads in the 1960s and earlier 1970s. This shot comes from a documentary on serial killer Fred West, who presumably drove one of these.
