Maybe the people in these songs are masochists.

Britney's invitation to "hit me one more time" ...most listeners take it to mean bodily contact of a certain other kind.

Pat Benatar also didnt mean it literally. At least thats not my interpretation. I thought she mean hit her with a pick up line...she was taunting a PUA to try to seduce her.

But at least one rock critic I read DID take it literally, and was indignant at the "hypocrisy" that she would sing a song "normalizing spousal abuse on the same album that includes a song protesting child abuse (Hell is For Children).".

I think that that critic was mistaken. But who knows?
