The Solomon Islands has agreed to China’s contentious Belt and Road Initiative following a series of diplomatic meetings between the countries' foreign ministers, a spokesman for Beijing has confirmed.

Beijing’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin has welcomed the “historic” diplomatic meetings between China and the Solomon Islands.

The two countries have signed off on a security agreement which would see greater security cooperation and allow Honiara to call on Chinese troops to maintain social order.

Concerns had been raised the pact could lead to China establishing a base on the Pacific nation less than 2,000 kilometres from Australian shores.
