" Meteorologists have to study people almost as much as they study the weather. For as complicated as storms are, finding the right words to talk about them can be just as much of a challenge.

Balancing the need to convey accurate information while avoiding hyperbole or the “crying wolf” effect is a tough job under everyday circumstances, let alone in the midst of a life-threatening emergency.

The U.S. National Weather Service (NWS) reserves a handful of special phrases to use in their severe weather watches and warnings during the most serious threats to life and property.

Yay, no tornadoes in our hazardous weather outlook.
For now.
But that half dollar hail ...

"
This hazardous weather outlook is for northwest...north central and
west central Missouri...as well as extreme eastern Kansas.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Showers, perhaps a thunderstorm or two, are possible this afternoon
into the early evening hours. Severe weather is not expected.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Sunday through Friday

Hit and miss showers and thunderstorms are expected much of the next
week. A few storms on Sunday evening may be strong producing wind
gusts to 60 mph or hail to the size of half dollars.

Like with everything else, no matter what words they use there is going to be a significant portion of the public that there is nothing to see there, but hyperbole.

Tornadoes almost always hit a small area—but within that small area, lots of catastrophic damage occurs.

Even today, one cannot forecast the exact location of a tornado touchdown. So a “tornado warning” for a 20-mile area might seem hyperbolic if 19 of those miles remain tornado-free.
