Chinese interception of P-8A Poseidon on 26 May 2022
5 June 2022

Defence advises that on 26 May 2022, a RAAF P-8 maritime surveillance aircraft was intercepted by a Chinese J-16 fighter aircraft during a routine maritime surveillance activity in international airspace in the South China Sea region.

The intercept resulted in a dangerous manoeuvre which posed a safety threat to the P-8 aircraft and its crew.

The Australian Government has raised its concerns about the incident with the Chinese Government.

Defence has for decades undertaken maritime surveillance activities in the region and does so in accordance with international law, exercising the right to freedom of navigation and overflight in international waters and airspace.

Australian Defence officials have revealed a Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) plane was intercepted by a Chinese J-16 fighter jet over the South China Sea last month.

The incident happened five days after the Federal Election on May 26 during what Defence said was a "routine maritime surveillance activity" in international airspace.

A "dangerous manoeuvre" by the Chinese aircraft left the Australian crew on the P-8 maritime plane fearing for their safety.

Mr Marles said conducting surveillance over the South China Sea is 'completely within our rights under international law'.

'This is a body of water, which is deeply connected to Australia because of our trade, which goes through there,' he said.

It's like quoting the Russian spokesperson many times to prove that Crimea isn't Ukrainian territory...
I think the flight records clearly show that the interception took place in China's claimed boundary since the Republic of China - that is, the disputed area.

Who would have thought that China would dare to drive away non civilian aircraft that violated the scope of its claimed sovereignty?

Incidentally, this boundary line was measured and announced by the representative of the territory department of the Republic of China under the protection of warship of the United States Navy. At that time, later other South China Sea claimants were not even "countries".
The claim of the Republic of China (KMT Taiwan) is broader than that of the people's Republic of China.
