If a girl is friendly to you and asks what you do for a job does that mean she's interested in dating you?

It means she wants to know what you do for a living before deciding whether or not to date you.

People in general tend to have a hard time figuring that one out James. There's tons of stuff online by guys complaining of being friend-zoned but there's also tons of profiles on dating sites with women saying how they want to be friends 1st & see where it goes.

It might mean anything. It doesn’t necessarily mean she’s interested in dating you.

It’s not negative, though. She, at least, likes you as a person.

She wants to know what type of job you have, before choosing whether to date you or not.

If i ask a guy what he does for a job it just means I'm trying to pass the time in most cases.

Can be
a) she wants something from you
b) she is passing the time and having a friendly chat or
c) she thinks you are nice/friendly and wants to know more about you because she is naturally curious
d) she's interested and you got past the first hurdle and now she is checking how much you earn
e) she's asking people what they do for a living so she can sort out her own career options
f) she is an alien species that masquerades as a female so she can get you alone and eat you

↑ Good summation, although I think option f should include ". . . and/or inject her eggs under your flesh so that the larvae will have something to eat before they emerge."

^ In all honesty, that's the real reason why women ask.

Edit: :jester:

If a guy said these exact words here; he would be slammed by female posters calling him sexist :P and stereotyping women.

*Hides from WP womenfolk*

I'm glad I didn't comment on your profile photo when you claimed to have little fat.

Where I live, everyone asks other people what they do for a living. Apparently, it's not that common elsewhere, but really, it's just a conversation-starter.

We cannot possibly be the only ones who do this; if you run around assuming that any woman who asks is sizing a guy up, don't be surprised if you have trouble on the dating "scene."

People ask about employment for three main reasons (in my opinion):

1. To establish a "pecking order".  "I am a veterinarian, so I know more than you what is best for your dog."
2. To find common ground.  "You're into ham radio, too!  What's your call sign?  We should QSO on 80 meters!"
3. To pass judgement.  "You're between jobs?  Oh my, look at the time!  Gotta run!  Buh-bye!"

It is the assumption that I was constantly being "sized up" that inspired me to present myself in the best way possible.

I mean, if a man thinks women never pass judgement on him, he is likely to make no effort to clean up and dress up when going out.  As the song goes, "Every girl's crazy 'bout a sharp-dressed man".

The only time I've been asked to go on a date without mind games was when I was a high school sophomore and all I wanted to do is go home and play Diablo 2 online.

...So I just went home and played the game.
