Why is the neurodiversity movement so white?

At Autscape 2022, you could hear the autistic PhD student Marianthi Kourti and the autistic counsellor Sonny Hallett talking about autism, race, ethnicity and the whiteness of the neurodiversity movement. Here is what they say about their talk:

'From its conception, autism has been a predominantly white and western concept. Even in the development of the neurodiversity movement, autistic people of colour and/or of non-western origins are few and far between. In the UK especially, it is hard to see any concerted efforts to include autistic people from minority ethnic backgrounds in our discourse, while their absence or minimal presence is quite often glaring, even in spaces like Autscape. In this presentation, we discuss how we can move from ‘there should be more minoritized ethnic people here’, to ‘there are a lot of minoritized ethic people here and they have powerful voices enough to shape our dominant autistic rights discourse’. We include our perspectives as autistic minoritized ethnic people, discuss research and practice experiences and offer practical advice on how we, as a community, can create spaces that are inclusive of autistic minoritized ethic activists.'

Marianthi is an autistic soon-to-be University of Birmingham PhD
graduate, studying autism and gender. They also work as a research associate for Manchester Metropolitan University. They are Greek by background, but have been living in the UK since 2013. They are passionate about intersectionality in autistic activism.

Sonny is a founding member/former chair of Autistic Mutual Aid Society Edinburgh and an autistic counsellor. They have conducted/co-authored research on autism and mental health, experiences of counselling, autistic community and peer support. They are also interested in issues around neurodiversity and intersections with LGBTQ+ identities and people of colour.

Why does such a question need to be asked for?

If ethnic minorities want to get more involved then who exactly has been stopping them this entire time?

Looking at the schedule and presentations they have, it seems mostly geared towards autistic adults which is good. It seems a little bit cultist though in its content though.

I can explain that very simply. Here in the UK, ethnic minorities are literally that: Minorities. That's why you don't see many of them. The clue is in the name.

Box ticking. Don't like how it's geared towards being political. It's not really a place for autistics to chill out but it's rammed with agenda based talks.
