The U.S. military has a recruiting problem; the all-volunteer force could be at stake. Fewer and fewer young Americans want to serve, and due to obesity and other problems, fewer are qualified.

The Defense Department's top personnel and readiness leader blamed the nation's competitive job market as a major contributor. The Department is in fierce competition for skilled, relevant and innovative talent. The labor market, exacerbated by the effects of the pandemic and the military-civilian divide creates a challenging recruiting environment.

I'm sure understanding the motives of America's last substantial overseas ventures probably doesn't help recruiting efforts.

Join the Army. Visit the world. Meet interesting people. And murder them to pad the pockets of the military-industrial complex while permanently traumatizing those lucky enough to have survived. As for the dead? They f*****g deserved it for resisting our heroic good guys occupying their nation and violating it's sovereignty. Murka f**k yeah!

Part of the issue is a lack of trust.

US Army drops high school education requirement for recruits.

"Educated people are too smart to join the army. Better recruit less educated people who haven't learned why joining us is idiotic and immoral!"

Every field, military, government, education, service industry etc is having trouble finding new people. And hanging onto the people they have. I believe this is a result if so many people getting used to not working during Covid. And the likes of AOC saying "who wants to go back to work? (eww)".

In other words I'm blaming this on the Democrats who want a socialist universal income (welfare) system, and essentially encouraged people not to work, but of course now they and the rest of us are stuck with an out of control problem.

Not coincidentally, “boomers” are retiring in droves, leaving behind slackers whose only concept of armed conflict comes from FPS video games, and whose idea of work is watching their parents do it for them.

They simply could not handle the grit and grime of military service.

I suggest that anyone who thinks that soldiering is all about save points and power-ups read the story about General George S. Patton’s
Finest Speech Ever before they start criticizing and condemning generations that are and were better than they could ever imagine themselves to be.

They might also allow somebody diagnosed with autism at age 4, but who passes the entrance exam, to enlist.

And more opportunities for people who are at a dead end in life.

Yes indeed after so much abuse of power in government controls .. No one wants to fight for the country in favour of a easier lifestyle Aswell. This Stuff is happening on a big scale, from my experience . Gov abuse is down to the local levels of Government . So why would anyone willingly enlist . They willl need to conscript , or bring back the draft.
Even though we are not in a War. Prolly the same issues many Russian soldiers are facing, that have surrendered to Ukraine ..I think it helps to believe in something your fighting for .IMHO. They will have to start hiring criminals .
In order to get their sentences reduced . And then these are the people representing the USA in Wars .
Or your national guard responding to emergencies, ex- criminals looking for opportunities .??? Imho.

People at a dead end in life usually get that way because of criminal behavior, drug abuse, and/or mental illness. Rounding up people off the street and drafting them into military service may seem like a good idea at first, until you realize that criminals, addicts, and the mentally ill are always the first to wash out of boot camp.

If you were veterans, you would already know this.

Unless your values and early education might have lead you to the idea that military service was a honorable profession at one time. And volunteered at a very early age.
Your last statement about veterans causes me to wonder if you might ever had been a veteran or are considerably younger than you Let on to be . Have seen 1st hand soldiers getting through training that could barely form complete sentences . These people recruiting folks are just hoping to meet a quota … Regardless of the people actual qualifications as humans.

Your point was a good one, until you backhanded all veterans with your last statement about “if you were veterans”
IMHO

I am a veteran. Any allegedly “back-handed” comment I may have made was directed towards people who never served, and who pass judgement upon veterans and military service with little (if any) first-hand knowledge about being veterans/serving in the military.

I’m certainly not “passing judgment” about our military.

All I’m saying is that it could “turn around” people who are criminals, drug addicts, and such. Provide them with some discipline. People are sometimes told to enlist as part of their sentence for being convicted of a crime.

I’ve known people who have had a “past,” yet who served well in the military.

I think that's a good idea and would work for some. But I agree with Fnord that most wouldn't make it through boot-camp.

They wouldn't take me with an ASD-2 Diagnosis. So I wish them luck finding recruits. It was suggested that I work for the military as a civilian, but salaries in my areas of experience weren't remotely competitive with the private sector.

The Armed Forces will either have to invest more in training or start recruiting from allied countries.

If the US military can't find new troops they will have to get secondhand from elsewhere.
