Dave Coulier on first hearing Alanis Morissette's 'You Oughta Know': 'I may have really hurt this woman'

Quote:
And all this time we thought Uncle Jesse was one the one we had to look out for. Turns out Uncle Joey was the one breaking hearts. And to that we only have one thing to say — cut, it, out!

If you didn't already know this, during his run of playing the funny uncle played on Full House, Dave Coulier famously dated Canadian singer Alanis Morissette. We say famously because well, he was infamously known for being responsible for the relationships demise of their two-year relationship. Which Morissette more than generously detailed within the scathing lyrics of her major hit “You Oughta Know,” and the rest of the songs on its top-selling album, Jagged Little Pill.

Recalling the first time he heard the song on the car radio to Faction Talk hosts Sam Roberts and Jim Norton, Coulier explained he was at first simply just enjoying the song before recognizing the singer’s voice. Claiming that once he came to the realization of who it was, his immediate thought was, “Ooh, oh no! Oh, I can’t be this guy!” Dave then revealed that his next move was to race to a record store to buy the album. After which he sat in his car and listened to it from start to finish.

“There was a lot of familiar stuff in there that her and I had talked about,” Coulier said. “Like in ‘Right Through You’ ‘your shake is like a fish.’ I’d go, ‘Hey, dead fish me,’ and we’d do this dead fish handshake. And so I started listening to it and I thought, ‘Ooh, I think I may have really hurt this woman.’ And that was my first thought.”

Despite Alanis never revealing who inspired the track, here’s what we do know. Morissette and Coulier started dating in 1992, when she was 18 and he was 33. After spending two years together they broke up and then Morissette’s album came out a year later.

Someone just happened to have been 'feeling' that song only hours ago according to the 'what song are you feeling thread'.

They were such an odd pairing. She was young and edgy. He was…not. He’s definitely not who I envisioned the song to be about. That’s for sure.

I'm as "non-edgy" as one can be

Yet.....people in the past were very "edgy" to me....

The 90s were a very edgy time.

I've been in full-on Alanis mode for several days.

Maybe I should watch Full House as a form of therapy? 8O

I would call the 90s frumpy.
I remember long corduroy skirts and growing out bad perms.

I was caught up with grad school, my career, marriage, pregnancy, divorce, adoption, courtrooms and scum-sucking boyfriends who treated me like crap.

The whole Lilith Fair thing was pretty huge though.
Alanis and Jewel were great.

I'm convinced that Carley Simon wrote the song "You're So Vain" about me.

I think that's a very bad idea. LOL

I love Alanis. I think Jagged Little Pill is one of the best albums of all time. Pretty much all the songs are great and were hits.

I don't think I've ever seen it?

I know what it is, but I'm pretty sure I ran the other direction.

I knew a girl in one of the Jagged Little Pill videos.

I know very little about 90s pop culture.

The Grunge movement seemed to harken back to the 70s.

The twins were pretty cute; otherwise, Full
House was pretty standard sitcom fare to me.

The mid to late 90s was when the Internet really proliferated. Mostly dial-up, though.

I missed Grunge when it was happening.
I didn't even know it was a thing.

My exh was really into Classical at the time.
I guess I tried to impress him?
I listened to it even before we got married.

I didn't know about Grunge fashion either.
I was too busy wearing career clothes.

The first thing I remember was Kurt Cobain dying.
I heard some women talking about it at the park.
I had to ask them who he was.

I had a LOT of catching-up to do after my divorce.
By then I was into Lilith Fair and Hootie & The Blowfish.
It was another year or two before I found Dave Grohl.

The show was pretty bad unless you were 8 years old.

Was the girl in the music video an (aspiring) actress or was it more casual than that?

I was a bit too young to be fully into grunge although, in a lot of ways, the 90's were my decade.

I liked singer/songwriters. I listened to a lot of alternative music, but I liked folk stuff as well. I played the piano, so I frequently listened to Classical music, too.

I loved the show Daria.

I hated jocks.

I was super cool (in my own mind anyway).

It was this little girl named Allison Rheaume.

Her dad made this Ironic video as a knock-off, but Alanis saw it and loved it.

The video ended up on Much Music.
