MPs in the UK government voted not to stop water companies pumping raw sewage into rivers and seas. Therefore many UK beaches are being closed because they are contaminated by sewage. Polio has reappeared in the UK as well as lots of other strange diseases e.g. Hepatitis E.

The reason water companies are pumping out sewage is due to a shortage of the required chemicals as supply chains are squeezed by Brexit.

That explains why The Thames is so brown.

yes, if you look at the news you'll see that many beaches are overrun with sewage and some have been closed due to danger to human health. It's disgraceful that the government refused to stop this happening.

I absolutely agree.

Are they doing anything to clean this all up?

I don't think so, it's all being left to local councils, who are just closing the beaches for safety. I'm not sure what can be done anyway, they can't just block the sewage pipes to stop it.

The EU inspected all beaches and gave the cleanest ones a blue flag. Now we're not in the EU, they don't do that anymore so the UK government has just avoided that rule and allows sewage all over our beaches.

I don't mean to incite you but:

We, in New York, would be absolutely up in arms about this!

Our beaches are our entertainment lifeline.

Why won't the "local councils" do something about this?

That’s awful.I thought England was ahead of us on protecting the environment.

What's now? A toilet ban?

Just one crisis after another in this f****d up, corrupt country.

Not you specifically, but sometimes Americans get into the habit of assuming that social conditions are uniformly better everywhere else in the Western world, in particular other English speaking countries, which isn't necessarily true. What complicates this is that conditions vary considerably between US states and regions so there may be greater differences between Little Rock and NYC than between Brisbane and Perth, but people are struggling in most places.

No, please do incite us! The Brits seems to have become an uncaring, apathetic bunch who love to let the government ride roughshod over us.

And also...our government has put a law in place so the police can stop any sort of demonstration or protest.

Words fail me.

I don't know why local councils don't do something, but I suspect their powers are being eaten away by government policy.

Even old Conservatives e.g. John Major, are up in arms about our government's behaviour.

Yes we USED TO BE good at protecting the environment. But apparently environmental problems and climate change are fake news now, spread around by woke leftie liberals. I'd laugh if it wasn't so serious.

Don't give them ideas, Joe! lol.

This country is going to the dogs isn't it. Or maybe dogs would make a better government

Some of our lakes and rivers get closed because of E. coli and toxic algae.
It’s from fertilizer run off, farm animals and bad septic systems.Mostly in summer when it gets really hot and you want to swim.

This is actual water companies physically pumping sewage into rivers and the sea. Did you click on those links in my first comment? That shows the terrible sight of it.

Can you propose a solution that won't make farmers feel persecuted? It's a lose-lose situation.
