If the military feels it has to get involved it would be the ultimate norm breaker. A civilian-controlled military has been a core value of the American Republic. If that's broken the slippery slope can only lead to bad things.

Probably the top-level brass is loyal to the constitution. Below that level, if the s**t hits the fan I am not confident the military won't fissure like the rest of the country.
