Not my usual bailiwick, but since we periodically have threads about particularly tasteless promotions, e.g. Hitler themed products in various parts of the world, I present to you the latest in "Who Thought This Was A Good Idea?":

Quote:
A country club in Virginia has issued an apology for planning a 9/11-themed menu for this year’s commemoration of the Sept. 11 terror attacks, a decision that garnered heavy criticism online.

The special seafood menu, promoted by The Clubhouse at Aquia Harbour, included dishes such as “Flight 93 Redirect,” “First Responder Flatbread,” and “Pentagon Pie,” among others. The menu was taken down, according to WJLA, but the image has been shared across social media.

The menu was not well received, with one Twitter user calling the idea “beyond abhorrent.” Another Twitter user questioned how an idea like this even gets this far.

The “First Responder Flatbread,” described as “crispy” and “oven baked” on the menu, also received some backlash on Twitter, such as in the tweet below.

George White, the restaurant’s manager, shared an apology to the community’s Facebook page Tuesday night, saying his “intention was to bring attention to that horrific day 21 years ago” and that he meant to “honor those who lost so much as well as those who gave everything that day.”

White had no comment when he was contacted by WJLA.

The restaurant has also altered its menu to reflect the first Sunday of the 2022 NFL season, according to its Facebook page.

I really think the worst part is that it's meant to be earnest, but misses the mark so badly, snarkier satire wouldn't be nearly as cringeworthy. As someone who's both owned a restaurant and put some edgy jokes on the specials menu, I can't believe this got far enough that anyone outside the establishment saw it, like nobody realized this was a terrible idea.

Actually, on closer inspection I can't decide if the Remember-Tini is making me gag from the name or the ingredients, or just that they're calling that abomination a Martini style drink at all, ugh.

You'll have to make due with the "First Responder Flatbread"...

Man, this makes the Robert Kraft sandwich thing seem positively tasteful:

I was super mad when that happened, I already had a jerk pork sandwich on my menu and didn't think of it first.

Happy Birthday, Dad. Enjoy the lousy options on the menu. (My dad's birthday is on July 11th).

Charles Bukowski had observed that bad taste has made more money than good taste.

They didn't price all items on the menu $9.11 for the day(SMH)?

For dessert they should serve ...yellow cake! :D

Because that's why W. invaded Iraq. Saddam Hussien was supposedly smuggling "yellow cake uranium" from west Africa to build his nonexistent WMODs.

I was worried about posting a joke due to this being an American-centric forum. Looks like I needn't of worried.

I had to think twice before posting my “joke” but I realized we are not making fun of 9/11, we are making fun of the owner. People have used dark humor to deal with dark times forever. In the last few years people have become infamously more easily offended taking away this mental device to deal with pain.

If this were 2002 not 2022 no way would I joke about this. If anybody is offended they can report us to the mods.

Another thread hijacked, oh well.
