Adult animation in America is nothing but Family Guy clones. Don’t get me wrong, I love Family Guy and The Simpsons. But we need a variety of adult animation. If Japan can do it, America can do the same. Why is need more adult animation that is not sitcoms or comedy in general. Why is that we haven’t seen more non-comedic adult animation?

One show I recommend is Primal. A Caveman named Spear and a Dinosaur named Fang team up to survive in the prehistoric world they live in after their respective families were killed and eaten by predators.

It's dark, brutal, tragic, and very violent. One of Genndy Tartakovsky's best works.

Adult Swim has always had good and unique adult-oriented animated shows. My favourites are Aqua Teen Hunger Force, 12oz Mouse and Smiling Friends.

I'm not fond of dark, brutal animation myself, even if it's aimed at adults.

The few anime I've watched and enjoyed are mainly in the style of a sitcom or full of wacky humor

Most cartoons aimed at kids in the 90s were more adult and better than the adult ones made now. The modern writers think the only way to make an adult cartoon is to be as disgusting and offensive as humanly possible with incredibly unlikable characters, stupid plots, absolutely no humor and bland animation. We're living in a second Dark Age of Animation except the 1st Dark Age had some cartoons that were actually good, like Rocky and Bullwinkle.

1st dark age was with all the Scooby Doo clones because Hannah-Barbera couldn't think of anything original, right?

Likely you have been looking in the wrong places.

Have you tried googling ‘Ecchi’ or ‘Hentai’ instead?

Here's one. F is For Family.

It's less of a comedy and more of a dramedy as you watch a family struggle with life in the 1970s.

Pros - No dumbass dad trope. The Dad is very quick to anger and yells at people. Swears too.

Cons - If you don't like listening to parents fight while their kids listen in, avoid. Subject matter may get close to home.

Ignoring anime, there is the likes of Rick and Morty, as much as there is the issue of people who think they are so mature for being into it. There is also Bojack Horseman, as much as it is also pretty crass, but not a dumb show.

And for Western animation doing what anime does, try the Castlevania, it is a pretty cool action series, that is also funny and stuff. They announced a new season/series for it of a new generation, which I will be looking forward to.

Hah, I came here to mention ATHF & Smiling Friends. That style is seriously the best, and somehow still hugely underrated

Adult animation is a very central part of my life. It even influences my social and professional lives.

One of my all time favorites is The Venture Bros. Imagine Johnny Quest on meth.

Very much in the spirit of Robert E. Howard's fiction.
