The more time I spend on social media the more I realise how basic my skills are, how about you?

You can't understand him cos he can't advocate for himself (kidding)

I rely on God, cos its rare that a situation has resolved when I went looking for help from man

Advocating can be difficult. It is not always because of communication difficulties.
When you talk about your needs it can be difficult for others to deal with. Another reason is that you don't want to be seen as a difficult person to be around as they have to think if they will do something wrong. You might even be seen as a complainer.

I don't do social media, so I don't have to advocate for my self there. Everywhere else? I do well enough to have made it this far.

People should only social media of they have a company. That's how I see it!

If you mean in a normal fashion, I can do ok. If in a legal situation, I try to stay away from that if I can.

I think it was abraham Lincoln that said something, about such people, that I won't repeat because it might be taken as offensive here. 8(

Well, I checked, and the site is ANOTHER person giving it more context, and it is a LITTLE less offense sounding.....

No. I try and fail, but I never stop trying.

If someone was talking nonsense about autism, for example, would you be able to join the conversation and put your views forward, clearly and succinctly?

Not really. I find it difficult to speak up for myself. As a result, people tend to step on me. It's my nervousness and awkwardness that disable me from even just talking, let alone advocating for myself. I believe it's quite common among autistic people to be unable to advocate for themselves well enough.

Maybe. Maybe not.

If I were in a state when I'm articulate and persuasive, I'm certain.
But I'm not most at the time.

I am clear and coherent in writing. I'm not in speaking. I can't make myself clear and only think of what to say hours/days/ weeks later. I try to give myself a script when I have to talk on the phone or whatever but I lose interest in it and can't follow it.

I am a person of two halves and it shocks others.

You've just described me (I'm not that clear in writing either...but way better than verbally). 8O

I'm clear verbally for a short while, when my script hasn't ran out! Then I just start quoting American psycho or something and hope for the best.

I've often done quite well advocating for myself, but it depends on the exact situation. It can certainly be a problem area for me. But I think some of the "service providers" are very skilled at providing nothing, so advocating for oneself can be hard even for the strongest people. I've sometimes wished that somebody else would sort these things out for me so I could get on with something a bit more interesting that all that bureaucratic gobbledegook, but I'd have to pay for a case worker, and I've heard that case workers don't necessarily do their jobs very well. Much of the task boils down to knowing how a particular thing works, what phrases and bits of paper are needed to force the required result out of the provider, so an ordinary person - a non-specialist - has to climb a different learning curve for each thing they want. It would be much easier to self-advocate for just one thing every so often, so that the skill would improve over time.

I think it's what someone said about a spiky profile. Brilliant at some things, hopeless at others. I wish the general public would accept this.

e.g. I'm above average intelligence so I know a lot, but have no idea how things like car engines work. And even how money works. I can't estimate the price of things or even understand how some things have prices, such as train journeys. How does travelling cost money?
