Something I've noticed is if someone posts a strong negative opinion on a music comment section, it often produces a response of "they are not bad, they just aren't for you"

So is all art equal?

Not really.

There's a few different things music can optimize for:

- Complexity / player prowess
- Depth and fidelity / representation of a given mood or idea
- Sort of like the above - rare moods and places
- Nostalgia

You can also max for popularity but that's a different thing than most of the above, and similarly some bands that never intended to be 'popular' in their sound somehow get a big following.

If the musicians can't play for anything you can say it's rather bad.
If the artist just loops the same thing with no subtle morphing or changes you can say it's bad.
If the lyrics are unironically vapid you can either say it's bad or that its pop.
If it's just a sheet of noise with nothing of note going on within it you can say it's not really much of a production.
If the EQ'ing / mixing / mastering is a mess you can say it got butchered on the way out.

There is the category of 'so bad that it gets a cult following' like The Shaggs.

Overall you have to be able to listen and check off the following:

- Does it sound like the artist had a cohesive vision of what they were doing?
- Does it sound like the artist delivered on their vision?
- Are there really cool subtleties that you don't catch the first time but pick up on later listens?
- Does the mood of it give you chills in a sublime way?
- Is the drum work, guitar work, or whatever else complex enough that you can barely keep track?

If it hits all five of the above it's almost a magic trick in audio, and in that case you have at least a reasonably good tune (leaving some margin for taste).

Yes, art (and especially music) is extremely subjective. It's really just a matter of preference.

I'd argue that music is one of art's toughest 'games', because people have such refined, specific tastes that it's almost impossible to create something that somebody is guaranteed to like. On the flip side, even if you make harsh noise or vaporwave, you're almost guaranteed to have a few listeners who don't mind the repetitive or dissonant nature - just post it online and someone will listen.

There really are no absolutes, 'rights' or 'wrongs' in music. It just depends on what you're into.

Yes, I consider musical quality to be mostly in the ear of the beholder. Though if the artist aims at a particular result then the competence factor may be an absolute thing. Even so, if the artist has failed but somebody loves the result, then for that listener it's a good piece of music.

When people call a musical work "good" or "bad," then if they mean it literally they're guilty of bigotry, or "absolutism" as I tend to call it, which I think is a grievous but common fault in the human race, but sometimes people say that kind of thing merely as shorthand, or as a way of venting, with no intention of projecting their own reactions onto the thing they're reacting to.

To a degree, I think that's right. There are certain widespread criteria for a good singing voice, such as accurate pitch, volume and timing. We tend to assume singers are aiming at those standards, and consider them incompetent if they fail to achieve them. None of this is quite so true for classical work, where the criteria for excellence tend to be more set in stone.

It really depends what you're talking about and the context. Just think about it that way next time you come across that scenario. "What is the context? What is the style, what's the setting, is it a recording or live performance?" Etc. Someone who is just a listener or layman will have a different point of view from someone who is active in a particular field of music too. Even then it's still super subjective. That's just how music/art/performance is.

Nope, not even close. If someone has to use autotune to make it sound like they can sing (which is sadly a very common thing in the music industry these days), then it means that they're a talentless loser. :disgust:

Same thing can be said about songs where there isn't a single real instrument to be heard.

There's both glowing exceptions to that as far as genius-level electronic music producers and all kinds of 'real instruments' sampled in other cases which I'd imagine voids your metric of 'real instruments' in the context that no manual dexterity over a traditional instrument, on the part of the producer, was involved.

Define real instrument. Synthesizers, sequencers and samplers most certainly are real instruments and I dare anyone who disagrees to try to put together their own song using nothing but those tools.

What about when singers are using auto-tune as an effect, are they still talentless losers? I'm not much of a fan of T-Pain but he's consistently demonstrated he can sing without autotune, as much as he's also very much known for heavy autotune use.

You sound ignorant about what goes into making music outside of the music you personally enjoy. I get it, I used to be one of those people too, but I'm grateful I realized how wrong I was.

Yes, when I found out that Picasso was perfectly able to draw and paint realistically, my respect for him went up a bit. It's hard sometimes to separate personal musician-behaviour standards from the effect of the art itself. Generally I don't like to see artists cheating too much, and it does prejudice me against their music to some extent. I quite like the effect of autotune when it's used as an artistic thing, but it wouldn't work in a lot of the music I prefer to listen to.

I cheat by comping vocal takes, but I only use pitch shifting in an emergency, and then only manually on the odd flat note. Because I have to actually sing every phrase properly sooner or later during the session, when I'm done I can usually sing it better than I could when I started the session. I guess it's cheating in a way to record more than one take, but most people probably do.

I think synthesizers and all that are real instruments, like people can make music with them which makes them instruments and I like electronic music. As for autotune it can be a cool effect sometimes but for sure some artists use it constantly like as a voice enhancer which I don't enjoy. Like too much and they just sound like a furby toy from the 90's, which I guess some people think sounds good but I don't like it.

I'm with you, in that it's not my thing.
I just get that it's an intentional effect instead of a lack of singing ability.

People sometimes insist that an artist who uses harsh vocals, or raps, or uses autotune can't sing and that's a stupid assumption to make.

The piano is best. :P

I actually think that all music is equal more or less. It's all about what you enjoy. My favorite genre is classical, but I don't think it's objectively better than anything else. I tend to prefer an acoustic sound, but I don't find other instruments less worthy. I certainly prefer playing on expensive acoustic pianos over expensive keyboards/digital pianos, but that's just my personal preference.

I love folk and acoustic music too.
Especially with guitars. 8)
I love classical but prefer it with stringed instruments, like Bach.

I do like Elton's piano, and Mozart.
Some piano reminds me of kids poking me for attention.
Chopin makes me wanna stick my face in a wood chipper.
It's too sporadic.
I'm not a huge fan of Jazz for that reason.

I don't believe any genre is better than another.
Music as a whole fascinates me.

I'm amazed how the world's best music came from "nothing".
One day it didn't exist, and then it did.
Can you imagine the world without Beatles, or Beethoven?
It amazes me that people can just "create" this stuff out of their minds.

PS More guitar is always good though no matter what. :)
