Cool! Everyone should celebrate and enjoy Halloween (also called All Saints Day, and Reformation Day).

I was under the impression that Halloween is "All Souls Day," and that November 1st is "All Saints Day."

We had very few Trick-or-Treaters last night. I don't know if the problem was that it was a weeknight, or that it was drizzling rain and chilly, or people are nervous about letting their kids out 'til the U.S. medical news for little kids gets better.

I was expecting a lot of Trick-or-Treaters so I'd encouraged my bride to buy a lot of candy. And it's stuff I like.

Today is All Saints' Day.
Tomorrow is All Souls.

Yes. The day before "All Saint Day" is "All Hallow's Eve". Which morphed into "Halloween".

That's "hallow" in the sense making something 'holy' (in this case honoring the saints).

But ancient Irish Celtic Pagan day of "Samhain" was about the same time of year and figures in the ancestry of the day as well. The Irish had the custom of carving a scary face into a gourd. And their Americanized descended took it bigger and did the same with pumpkins.

In Mexico they also celebrate a holiday known as Day of the Dead which has some similarities to these holidays. They believed it was the one night of the year when the souls of the dead could return to the world of the living and the locals would set a place at the table for their deceased loved ones or have a picnic in the cemetery where they were buried. And people would paint skulls on their faces and eat candy and treats shaped like skulls.

To claim that it's the "Mexican Halloween" would probably be very offensive but I think there's no doubt that it's a holiday with some similarities to things like Halloween and Samhain. The ancient celts from what I heard also believed their deceased loved ones would return on this day and they would celebrate with food and games, some of the games involved divination to contact the dead.
