Donald J. Trump faced unusual public attacks from across the Republican Party on Wednesday after a string of midterm losses by candidates he had handpicked and supported, a display of weakness as he prepared to announce a third presidential campaign as soon as next week.

As the sheer number of missed Republican opportunities sank in, the rush to openly blame Mr. Trump was as immediate as it was surprising.

Conservative allies criticized Mr. Trump on social media and cable news, questioning whether he should continue as the party’s leader and pointing to his toxic political brand as the common thread woven through three consecutive lackluster election cycles.

I'm relieved to see he's increasingly unlikely to be president again. Boris' planned comeback in the UK also failed, another encouraging setback for dishonest right-wing populists. That's two battles possibly won in the War On Misery™ but I'm not sure how important they'll turn out to be in the longterm big picture.

I expect Republicans to stop covering his ass now and let the FBI and law enforcement do their job.

Maybe, but Trump still has enormous popular support. Even if people are apathetic to not going to vote in the mid-terms doesn't mean they wouldn't be hyped by the MAGA rallies/circus to come out in 2024 to see popstar Trump back on the podium.

I think the midterm results show to the Republican politicians that psychofans of Trump are not worth the mobilisation of anti-Trumpists.
Democrats have played smartly, silenced their most fringe wings and invested in solid moderates. I think they read the trend correctly. The "silent majority" is becoming tired of nutters and mobilized to vote against them.

Let's hope so. The latter half of this decade doesn't need a MAGA inspired world power to dominate the world again. No doubt Trump's close friend Putin will be secretly helping strategise a Trump victory in 2024 with members of the GOP.

I hope he has enough his own problems to worry about at that time

I think the Trump situation is more hopeful today than yesterday, which is a good thing, because I'm tired of living under the shadow of his possible return to power, so every little helps. Clearly the Left can't afford to relax yet though.

I hope Trump ends up in prison between now and 2024, for two reasons:

1. He would be unable to be president.

2. Given what often happens in prison showers, hilarity would ensue.

That's not good at all. At least he won.

In 2016. He lost in 2020 and he's becoming more and more unlikely to even become the candidate in 2024.
