Hi, I am a 28 year old autistic gay man. Does anyone ever feel like they can never keep friends and resort to keeping to themselves in preparation for a lack of support?

Pretty much, I keep to myself by choice.

I don't really have a yearning for a "social life."

Yes my social life has usually felt precarious. Of course one reason is my small number of friends which means that losing one friend makes a big difference, but if I were to somehow make tons of friends then I couldn't maintain them all, it's complicated enough with 2 or 3. I'm always losing people without meaning to. I'm very rarely proactive in making friends, I just play music and sometimes people befriend me because of that or (more rarely) regardless of it. I've also studied psychology and suspect that's helped me to get on with people quite well. So my social success blows in the wind, pretty much out of my control, swinging wildly between isolation, oversocialisation, and something in the middle. I have little choice but to keep myself in preparation for lack of support, though with the Internet I'm never far away from some kind of social interaction if I get lonely or want to give or get help and advice.
