Yes, according to the botanical definition of "berry", both tomatoes and pumpkins are berries.

The pineapple is related to neither the pine nor the apple.  It is, instead, a cluster of berries grown into one solid, pulpy mass -- another aggregate fruit.

A banana is also classified as a berry.

Tomatoes and pumpkins may be technically fruits, but I still wouldn't put them in a fruit salad.

"fruit" and "berry" both have a botanical definition and a culinary definition which are different. In the botanical definition tomatoes are berries, while strawberries are not. In the culinary definition, tomatoes are not berries, while strawberries are.

If you ask people if a tomato is a fruit, many will say yes. Ask people if a tomato is a berry, however, and a "yes" response is unlikely.

All berries are fruit, but not all fruit are berries. Or maybe they are. A fruit is basically the "seed container" of a plant.

Vegetables are usually the part of a plant that's eaten, like the roots or leaves. Peas and beans are actually seeds in containers but they're normally called a vegetable. Or a legume.

I think I read somewhere that the strawberry itself isn't actually a berry, however.

I think pineapples got their name because of their resemblance to a pine cone.

Kiwi Fruit was originally called 'the Chinese gooseberry" because Europeans thought they tasted like a ripe gooseberry. Then they got the name Kiwi fruit in New Zealand because of their resemblance to a Kiwi bird.
