Bladder issues
Deleted from Adult Issues and moved here.
I know that there are plenty of people with autism that have never been able to gain continence or control of their bladder completely.
As a kid I was a bedwetter until age 17 or so. Now as an adult in my 30s I have urge incontinence/OAB issues as well as the bedwetting returning.
Has anyone else had incontinence develop in adulthood but not due to any known physical cause? My PCP/GP hasn't outright said that it's related and I never outright asked but he has not pushed me to see urology, and as a kid a doctor strongly implied the bedwetting was related to the ASD and ADHD.
What are your experiences with bladder issues as an adult, or when you were a kid?
funnily enough i was nonverbal and behind in development as a kid but i seemed to be very toilet trained but i needed help wiping so whenever i needed the toilet i would cry and there was only 2 reasons i ever cried and that was if i hurt myself or if i needed the toilet..so my my parents knew..
i would hate to be incontinent because its embarrassing unless your elderly
question how do incontinent women of child bearing age deal with periods?

It definitely feels embarrassing as a 36 year old, but for the most part I think it is internalized. Most other people have never said anything or seemed to care when they've found out.
See a Urologist …….. you might be surprised , what a relief it maybe be when you check into all the variables .
Situations like these really should be addressed by a specialist . Sorry your having these issues .
Took me many years before. I started to look beyond what doctors were telling me. That were not really qualified to address specific issues . Have had urgency issues all my life , but the Urologist addressed it as a infection.
And within three days , I had much better control . But not a perfect cure. Started to think I could hold it much longer than I could in reality.
. But I am getting better at these things . And yes humans with certain conditions do need adult diapers . But try not to let them get you over confident . But it seemed to remove some of the stress, of not quite making it to the lavatory in time.
.
( just a suspicion but I think Aspies might tend towards getting fungal infection more often than average.
And if it does not get caught by some Urologist early on , People just think they have to live with it.)
[especially males].

yes, see a doctor. There are many possible causes and treatments, rule those out before just accepting that you will have another struggle. Even if bladder problems continue to be an issue, there are many others also handling management and self care related to this issue. You are definitely not alone.

Obviously. I said my doctor not my PCP. I also refer to my gastro as my doctor, my psychiatrist as my doctor. I was talking about testing for specialty services I figured it was clear I meant an urologist.

I wet the bed until I was 13. I think it had a lot to due with stress. I was bullied all the time in school and never really adjusted to my niece living with my parents. After I was homeschooled and my niece moved in with her father and step mother, then I stopped wetting. My parents were told to try ABA approaches and try to train me with rewards to stop wetting the bed. It never worked and the psychiatrist suggested my parents just make me wear diapers to bed...and I guess she told them to shame me about it too. I went to a summer camp supposedly for special needs kids. I need to use the bathroom but the person I was assigned too didn't want to get up to take me to the restrooms and told me in front of all the other children and camp staff, "Just go in your diaper!" That set me back for a while too. Supposedly it was a special needs camp but not everyone working there was qualified to work with special needs kids.

^^^^ Yes indeed … can agree with coffee giving me a case of bladder urgency all by itself .Repeatedly ..
But it does seem to help the brain be alittle more alert , I feel .. Even heard at least one person on the internet refer to it as a Nootropic …( brain booster) but I wonder if it causes some kinda dehydration ? What is the effect on the brain of mild dehydration?

Both. There were no background checks for people working there. Most of the counselors were college or high school students wanting to pursue careers in special education or psychology. But none were background checked. Whole camp was very under funded. My brother's best friend's wife is a special needs elementary school teacher who volunteers there sometimes. She said there was a convicted pedophile working there. Some of the shower doors did not have doors and the pushy concolor did not care about YOUR privacy. It was mostly aimed at severely special needs children or physically disabled ones. I HATED it and never had fun there. Eventually I just screamed and screamed and intentionally acted aggressive towards people so they would kick me out. They did. My mom finally got the message not to send me back. I would have had more fun at a camp more geared towards my special interests such as zoo camp or pony camp but my mom refused to even look into those. Story changes every time I ask and I just get gaslighted.

I've never had an issue with bedwetting or incontinence, but ever since I was a kid I've had to pee a lot. It was annoying when we went on trips. I can never sit through a movie, whenever I see a movie in theaters I miss several scenes and have to rewatch it at home to get the full movie. My therapist recently told me this is a symptom of anxiety.
