CNN's Nick Paton Walsh speaks with 16-year-old Dasha, who says she was raped by a Russian soldier in her village in Ukraine's Kherson region. CNN cannot independently verify Dasha's story, but Ukrainian prosecutors in the Kherson region said in a statement they had investigated her account. #CNN #News

Numbers are impossible to calculate, but evidence is growing that Russian soldiers are using rape as a weapon of war in Ukraine. In areas retaken from Russian troops, civilians are giving horrifying accounts of sexual violence. The International Court has opened investigations into more than 400 cases, but these will not be the only ones. DW’s Rebecca Ritters went to Bucha on the outskirts of Kyiv, a place already notorious for Russian soldiers killing civilians. There she found the story of one young woman whose parents have been left in horrendous uncertainty.

Something that may help understand why Russian soldiers are capable of mass scale cruelty:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dedovshchina

It's real. They are cruel to their own, people are being routinely broken in the army. This makes cruelty to outsiders easy.

In Poland, a similar phenomenon was called "fala" ("the wave"), but it was usually limited to psychological abuse. "The wave" is said to have largely declined after switching from conscript-based army to professional army.

In Borodianka, a Ukrainian town in the Bucha district, northwest of Kyiv, 81-year-old Taisia Herasymenko says her son was shot dead by Russian soldiers. She is seeking justice and hopes a trial will come soon.

The case is one of many that Ukrainian and international officials are investigating in the Bucha area where mass graves were discovered. Reuters follows investigators as they try to put the pieces together and look for any evidence of executions and torture.

I know, Pepe.
It triggers something in you.
I've experienced the same when this war started. For some reason (epigenetics?), our bodies "remember" what happened to our parents and grandparents.
It's hard to describe but it's real.

Trigger Warning:

Sexual assault/hazing occurs in all militaries---but the Russian version seems to be one of the most egregious.

I wasn’t exactly sexually assaulted in a camp setting like the military…but about 5 kids stuck their penises in my face in summer camp when I was 15.

This kind of crap is more common than we think.

Future generations of Russians will be haunted by this, as much as Germany is by the Holocaust, the Confederacy for fighting a war to ensure the survival of slavery, and American genocide of Native Americans.

Russian apologists will try and hide the Truth.

Nope. Still even today, we have Neo-Nazi Holocaust deniers, as well as Neo-Confederates who deny the American Civil War was actually about slavery.
