Yes I know there are some people who like every genre of film, but what about if you picked 5 of your favourite movies that you could watch over and over again or have watched over and over again.
(Sequels still count as one movie).

For example, the five favourite movies of mine that I'd pick are:-

1. Inbetweeners movies
2. Diary Of A Wimpy Kid
3. Room
4. Boyhood
5. Effel And Ernest

These favourite movies of mine are either comedy, family or drama, but they all involve very little fantasy or sci-fi, and are relevant to everyday life, and are revolved around people (friendships, family and love). So it sort of shows that I'm a very emotional person and has interest in people and don't like things to be too complicated or logical.

So this isn't strictly about what genres you like, it's more about if you had to pick five of your best movies that you love, would that give an estimation on what sort of person you are based on the genres from those specific five on average?

I have no idea but i don't think this is true. My favorite movies/media are all dark themed and disturbing. I have read that people who have undergone trauma and/or mental health issues with no help often find it relieving to read and watch these material. It validates our experiences in a way. I find it fascinating.

That's still what I meant. Maybe "personality" wasn't the right word, although it might be sometimes, but it could also be based on life experiences too.

My brother has always been the sensitive, depressive introvert type (gothic but doesn't look like a goth), and he's always loved horror movies. So I think that reflects his sort of character.

Can one tell another's personality based on their favorite movies?

I believe one can get a glimpse of one or more facets of a person's personality.

I wrote a program that selected 5 random titles from the 1431 titles I own on DVD and Blu-Ray. (I've been collecting for many decades.) The selection was too small. I increased it to 20, and it is a better selection.

End of the World
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
Coraline
Rurouni Kenshin, Samurai X - Trust
Black Cat, The
House The Complete Collection
Miss Marple: Sleeping Murder
Haunted World of Edward D. Wood, Jr., The
Day the Sky Exploded, The
Seventh Voyage of Sinbad, The
Devil Monster
Our Hospitality / Sherlock Jr.
Satellite in the Sky
Simpsons, The
Creature from the Black Lagoon
Be Big! (Laurel and Hardy from 1931)
Bat, The
Shine
MST3K - First Spaceship on Venus
The Age of Adeline

Thank you Joe90 for bring this up.

I’ve always said I don’t like any movies that don’t have a house in them. I can’t do sci fi, outer space, those things where superheroes drive or fly around nuking one another, cops and robbers, or cowboy movies where they just ride horses in dirt. I call those brown movies because everything is brown (horses, dirt, boots, hats).

I need a house and ideally a family even if it’s a scary story or if the house is only in a few scenes.

I can’t do computer animation either. Nothing Pixar including Toy Story and later. Animation needs to be hand drawn.

I woke up this morning thinking about this question.
Provided they see the film as you see it, and in react the same or similar way, then yes. It is just like when one culture experiences a WORD in a very different way than another. Swear words like like that, but other words have different meanings.

For example, I really liked the movie A.I.Artificial Intelligence. I liked it for reasons that went beyond the story as well as the story. A person I worked with saw the movie and had a very different experience. So if someone were to ask him what he could tell about me from the movie, he possibly could only describe it from his point of view.

If I provide a title, and they have not seen the movie, they could tell nothing about me. It would be like a foreign language to them.

Also, returning to the experience aspect. There are movies I like not because they are good or bad, but because of what the movie represents to me. I may like a "bad" film because what the film suggests about the challenges of making a movie more than the movie itself. Sometimes I like a movie because of what I know about the movie, or what I know about an actor in the movie.

Here is an example. I really liked Star Wars, episodes 1 through 3. There are people that seem to loath those films, and they have their reasons. I liked them. It did not bother me that the force was defined in terms of midi-chlorians and that there was a scientific explanation. I almost suggested they could be a religious explanation except they could be measured.

Sorry, it is not the first time I've been told I take the fun out stuff, or that I don't know what I'm talking about. Both are true.

I still liked the question. I would like to think the answer is yes, but I suspect the answer is no. When I die, someone will take the thousand plus titles I own and not give me a second thought. It will be straight to the second hand store, e-bay, or possibly the city dump. That's ok.

<=>- The Day the Earth Stood Still
<=>- Colossus: The Forbin Project
<=>- The Crawling Eye
<=>- WALL●E
<=>- the Marx Brothers' movies

:shrug: But that's not enough! I'd also want a bunch of other great stuff!

I love it when films have an offbeat comic book-esque style. Take for instance Scott Pilgrim. It uses a mixture of live-action and visual effects - such as illustrating certain words or visualising the music as waves that can be manipulated by the characters and turned into weapons. I just think it's neat when such details are included. Whilst Heartstopper isn't a film, I do love that in the TV adaption they kept the leaf details and the sparks of electricity. I am looking forward to the next season.

Anyway, I also have a soft spot for stop motion. There's just something about the way stop motion moves that makes it so interesting.

If I had to list five films...hmm...

1) Into the Spiderverse (2018)

2) Scott Pilgrim VS the World (2010)

3) The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

4) Wendell and Wild (2022)

5) Matilda (1996)

Make of that what you will.
