The US government has received more than 500 reports of unidentified flying object (UFOs) sightings since 2021, with hundreds remaining unexplained.
According to a report from the Director of National Intelligence (DNI), 247 “unidentified aerial phenomenon” (UAPs) reports have been filed with it since June 2021.

The figure is an increase from the 144 sightings of suspicious aerial objects previously reported.
Of the 366 new reports, 26 were determined to be drones, 163 were balloons and six aerial objects were attributed to various objects and animals like birds, weather or debris.

Around 171 sightings still remain unexplained, being labelled as “uncharacterised and unattributed” – meaning not enough information was collected to effectively identify them.

“Some of these uncharacterised UAP appear to have demonstrated unusual flight characteristics or performance capabilities, and require further analysis,” the report said.
“We take reports of incursions into our designated space, land, sea, or airspaces seriously and examine each one,” said Pentagon Spokesman Pat Ryder in a statement.

The increase in sightings is merely do to the increase in the number of alarmists with cell phones...nothing to fret over.

Also due to the U.S. government's recent encouragement of the public to report UAP sightings.

(The U.S. government is most likely encouraging this due to concerns about possible advanced military technology being developed by China, Russia, et al.)

Easy to spout in a dismissive manner but how easy to legitimately document that there is no actual increase in numbers of the things including the number of unsighted ones?

I'm not going to pass judgement until there is peer-reviewed science on the number of unsighted versus sighted from history to the present.

Somewhere I once came across material expressing that there is an intelligence driving the thing and that throughout history the way it manifested, was presented, has changed with the times and the current technology.

The author/speaker did detail how the performance and described details of what was seen has evolved as humanity developed balloons and then engine-powered heavier-than-air flight.
And how, yes, the source of that apparent evolution could be either the thing itself, or the minds and knowledge of the observers, or a varying mix of both.

Right now I'm not sure if it was a thing they stated outright or my own deduction from the worldview they presented, but if an intelligence is driving the thing for whatever reasons it has, then it could be expected that intelligence might increase the number of presentations as the ability to record those presentations increased.

I'm pretty sure the author/speaker did say something along the lines of "There seem to be times where this thing wants to be seen and will give you what you expect to see." and that in contrast there are also events where the observer had no existing desire to see or encounter such a thing and was left deeply unsettled and disturbed by the experience.

I guess it would be safe to say that the only absolute in the thing is that there are no universal absolutes in the thing.

SInce the 2021 US Pentagon report on UAPs was published, the government circulated standard proformas for people who witness the phenomenon to report their sighting. The encouragement was, however, not directed so much at the general public but at members of the airforce, army and navy. In particular, airforce pilots have in the past been discouraged from reporting due to the stigma and potential ridicule that might impinge their career progression.

Among the steps taken by US intelligence to rehabilitate the phenomena (after years of denial) is to cease using the term UFO. Unidentified aerial phenomenon (UAP) makes it seem the phenomena are new, when in reality the "tic tac" objects disclosed after 2017 were reported way back in WWII by airforce personnel (the now famous "Foo fighters") and famously appeared over Washington in July 1952 seen by hundreds of thousands of Washington residents in what was coined the "Washington Invasion".
