What is a mother figure?

It's like a "father figure" except the person is usually female, and takes on the role of a mother to someone who doesn't have a biological mother, usually by being protective, nurturing, caring, giving advice, and such. Could be people like a grandmother, an aunt, a teacher, an older sister, or something like that.
