Idk, in my teen years I used to be very woke and became extremely politically progressive and very left wing. Lately, tho, Idk. It just seems like, the more I look into it, everyone has their own personal reasons for either being more to the left, or more to the right, and the more I realize that, the more centrist I become. So for the sake of discussion, I'm just curious to ask, which political side are different members of the autism community drawn more to? And how can I even begin to decide which political views speak better to and for me as an autistic person? :| :?

Apparently people on here seem to be more on the left. But this is not necessarily representative of the whole autistic population. Personally I also was extremely left wing in my teens and my early twenties. Then I drifted more to the right. Now I consider myself a libertarian (which is called classical liberal or simply liberal in all other countries except for the U.S.). I consider myself to be in the centre if you consider the entire political spectrum, or centre-right since I also have some conservative inclinations.

I am not sure of my views since i am not that educated in the subject but, I would call myself a social democrat probably.

There are a number of themes on WP.

Some people are aligned with the Left because they depend on government assistance due to their disability.

Some people are angry about their lot in life and and attracted to populist politics e.g. MAGA, gun rights, etc.

Some people like to propound Libertarianism and Objectivism because they think that makes them smarter than everybody else.

For some reason there is a certain group that insists they are liberal but feel compelled to go on and on about the evils of wokeism, cancel culture, BLM riots, etc.

Then there's the usual people who insist they don't support the MAGAs but insist the Left is equally bad insofar as both sides of the political spectrum are in the pocket of Wall Street.

Some people have fairly reasonable views but can be quite nasty towards those who disagree with them, wanting to make those people feel stupid, which just reinforces the attitudes of those whose beliefs they try to "correct".

There are others who usually make sense even if I personally don't entirely agree with everything they say.

There's some pretty heavy overlap between those types. The type that will tell you how liberal they are while also consistently expressing hostility to any sort of cause that might be labelled as liberal/progressive/etc.

Hey, that's been pretty close to my own political journey, actually!! :D :) My political leanings have settled more into a centre-left position, for now, so I'm curious, what were the factors that led you to move away from the political left and more towards the political right?? :o

I'm a rightist in politics, although I'm a labour supporter and apparently labour are leftists. But I think a lot of poor people vote labour, and I'm poor.

I'm a pragmatic socialist. You need the free market to raise taxes to pay for services. If you tax the rich too heavily they'll move abroad or use other ways to avoid paying tax. Communism doesn't work as it drags everyone down. I think Kier Starmer is doing a good job of promoting a more caring alternative to the Tories and hopefully he'll do what Corbyn failed miserably to do. Win an election.

Sunak looks to me like the most competent PM since Cameron though so I think Kier has got a fight on his hands and I expect the polls to tighten as it comes to the next general election.

Thank you so much to everyone for the lovely and insightful responses!! :D :) You know, the more I think about it, I'm really mostly left-wing; I mean, how much more leftist can you get than being a queer autistic vegan, right?! :P The only thing that really trips me up as far as politics goes is the issue of misandry, since the left doesn't seem as universally willing or perhaps even able to acknowledge misandry as they are misogyny. :| :? While I think feminism is as vital and urgent today as it ever was, I would also like to find more acknowledgement of the ways that I feel like I was boxed in as a male throughout my life, although in my own case, these thoughts and feelings might also just be down to my own latent queer identity!! :o :colors:

Technically that doesn't mean you're required to be a leftist, it just means some right-wing allies will never tolerate you.

We have queer, autistic right-wingers on here. I don't why someone who would be offended to be called a she wants to enable so many people who want misgendering him to be the norm, but that's his choice.

I am a far right gold bug Gun Owners of America-supporting libertarian Republican Evangelical Christian Texas secessionist.I started becoming a libertarian in nature because of going to gun shows with my grandfather and hearing about Waco in the 90's.I am a libertarian but I vote Republican because the libertarians are not a viable party here in America.I am as about as Far-Right as they come.

I think millionaires, billionaires and people making 6 figures,churches,non-profits,corporations and every other kind of business and the clergy and the non-profit sector should not have to pay any taxes of any kind.I think we should abolish the income tax.I think every government in the country should be banned from borrowing money.I think we need to abolish the ATF,IRS,EPA.I think all weapons, all drugs, gambling, prostitution should be legal and very low to no tax and deregulated.I think we need to dramatically cut the budget for the Pentagon.I am a minarchist who believes that the Federal government should be a night-watchmen state.I think we should abolish all state and local and federal gun control.I think the economy and trade needs to be deregulated in all areas.

Tbh with you, I have a hard time understanding queer, autistic right-wingers. Like, if conservatives probably won't really accept you, then is it really worth it to have them barely tolerate you for who you are just so long as you agree with them?? :? :| Ik I might be describing the left to some embittered conservatives here, and if so, I can't really blame them there, either, but aren't some of the more impassioned sections of the right specifically attached to ideals of "western tradition" that see the greater acceptance and visibility of rights for queer people and disabled people as being akin to almost apocalyptic threats??

I think it's important to remember one can be disillusioned with one bloc without having to support their opponents. Too many people approach politics like it's a binary social club, when really it should be about finding people you agree with and can work with to promote ideals and work on issues that are important to you.

i don't know which is more appropriate for our times - the democratic party drifting as far to the left as the GOP has drifted towards fascism, or if the centrist dems and liberal GOPers [whatever remains] join forces.

Not sure about more appropriate, but the centrists joining forces is the scenario more likely to happen.
