Australia’s defence budget is expected to blow out as Treasurer Jim Chalmers flags major new investments with military spending likely to surge beyond the 2 per cent of GDP.

The Labor Government has committed to continuing its predecessor’s historic defence spending as Australia bolsters its military capabilities.

On top of existing promises including new frigates and 40 new Black Hawk helicopters, the government is set to reveal its progress in obtaining at least eight nuclear propelled submarines in the coming months.

Mr Chalmers said the government’s defence spend was rising “substantially” ahead of further major announcements.

What do you reckon the new nuclear subs will be like?

An existing design, like the Virginia (US) or Astute (UK) classes, or a new next-generation one?

Too early to tell.
A couple of Republicans in Ameriia are saying supplying subs to Australia cause too many problems.
If the republicans get back in government, who knows what is going to happen?
The entire project may be scuttled.
That is why I am hoping the Democrats find a new Presidential contender that is in working order.

The Ameerian sub is the preferred choice, I believe, but if it doesn't work out, the UK version will be the goto, so I have heard.
