Gawd...how could you miss the meaning of the English language version of "Luft balloons"?

Always knew it was about "the end of the world". A bunch of innocent balloons are released into the air somewhere near the inter-German border where both sides had their hair trigger forces amassed during the Cold War, and both sides mistake them for incoming missles/planes..."this is it boys, this is what were waiting for, this is war, everyone's a superhero, everyone's a capt. Kirk....". Or thats the image I always had in mind when I heard it.

"Luft" means 'aloft'. So they changed it to "red" to keep the fit to the music in English.

Prince's lesser known song "Two Hundred Balloons" is from soundtrack of the first Bat Man movie. No idea what that song is about.

I did not miss the meaning of song the time. As you remember we were being flooded with Cold War/Nuclear Holocaust themed movies and songs. There was real fear that President Reagan was a reckless cowboy who would end up blowing up the world.

This song has been misinterpreted a basic love song. It’s about having sex when the bombs go off

Massive “Nuclear Freeze” NYC protest

Now it’s 4 decades later. Most people were not born or were too young to remember. All they are hearing is an upbeat cute song about balloons. How many of these people doing the YMCA dance with kids at sporting events, at weddings etc know the song is about?(Y.M.C.A.’s were popular hookup spots for homosexual men).

True. A baby born when the song came out would be middle aged today.

Back then you just had to hear someone speak/sing in German and you immediately thought about spy movies, the Berlin Wall, the Iron Curtain, and East-West tensions, without even knowing what they were singing about because Germany is where the two sides faced each other.

Was just gonna post about how the song became dated only a few years later...when the Cold War ended, and the Berlin Wall fell, and we were all listening to songs like the Scorpions' "Winds of Change" to celebrate all of that. Nena's hit became just an upbeat relic of "the Big 80s". Though its suddenly now become all too relevant again! Tensions are arguably even worse now, and we had a real drama involving a balloon.

Mexicans have launched a spy balloon in retaliation to China's balloon. It will be over chineese airspace in a few days.

Apparently at one time "balloon busting" was nothing to sneeze at.

If one was listening to alt-rock stations around this time this song was getting massive airplay.
