Not toroidal.

Not a standard modern propeller either. But not donut shaped. And the problem was that that one dude working that hand crank couldnt generate enough horsepower. Da Vinci didnt have access to gasoline engines.

Interesting story.

Back in the early days of steamships you had two competing types. The ones with propellers, and the ones with sidewheels.

Then one day they staged a tug of war between two steamboats with the exact same horsepower engines: one a prop, and the other with sidewheels. The one with the propeller won.

Maybe they could stage a similar tug of war now between a boat with a conventional prop, and one with a toroidal prop.

The number of times I've heard people say Leonardo invented the helicopter. Just because he drew a picture of one!

Well by that standard I invented interstellar warship and the flying tank by drawing them in the margin of my notebook in the third grade.
